Job Description 

The Neuroscience Program at Hope College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning by Fall 2024. The ideal candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in the classroom and develop a vigorous, externally funded research program that addresses questions of fundamental importance in neuroscience while engaging undergraduate students as active collaborators. Area of specialization is open. Candidates are expected to develop a Neurophysiology course (lecture class and lab), and contribute to teaching courses in the Neuroscience program such as Introduction to Neuroscience (lecture and lab), Advanced Neuroscience Research (lecture and lab), and/or a course within the candidate's area of research. The standard teaching load is three courses per semester, but is typically limited to two preparations per semester. We especially invite applications from candidates who prioritize diversification of their discipline through their teaching, research and background, and who can guide students toward more socially conscious education and career planning. We also welcome applications from groups that are historically underrepresented in academia and/or who have experience working with diverse populations. The Neuroscience Program at Hope College (https://hope.edu/academics/neuroscience/) is interdisciplinary and incorporates perspectives from biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, nursing, philosophy, and psychology. Students receive in depth training at multiple levels of neuroscience, including 1) the cellular/molecular level, 2) the systems-level and 3) the behavioral/cognitive level. Current faculty engage in research on a) neuronal function at the neurochemical level, b) behavioral neuroscience in animal models, c) neural regeneration and functional recovery at the systems level, d) disease animal models of bipolar disorder and Parkinson's Disease, and e) human peripheral physiology. Generous start-up funds for research are available, along with applications for internal research support and assistance in seeking external funding.

Qualifications 

• Ph.D. (with postdoctoral experience preferred) in Neuroscience.

• Promise as an excellent instructor.

• Potential to build an active research program involving undergraduate students.

• Understanding of and commitment to the Christian faith, with an understanding of the central role of evolution in biological processes.
