Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications

The University of Toledo is seeking a visionary leader to serve as associate vice president for marketing and communication (AVP).

The AVP serves as senior communications and marketing adviser to senior administrators; shapes and articulates an administrative voice for strategic initiatives and crisis communications; leads national, regional and local earned media relationship building efforts; provides strategic direction for internal and external communications and marketing efforts via print, digital, video and social media mediums; leads media, social media and communications team members (30%). The AVP leads efforts to protect and promote the brand and sub-brands of the University and all of its entities; provides strategic counsel to senior leaders on brand-related marketing efforts; oversees the development and implementation of integrated strategic marketing plans; leads marketing, web and graphic design teams (30%). The AVP directs and provides counsel and guidance for managers, directors and executive leadership on how to proactively and reactively work with media outlets and other stakeholder audiences in a way that puts the University in its best light and promotes the objectives of the University (20%). In addition, the AVP administers the University communications and marketing budget for the University and UTMC; manages director-level University communications and marketing staff. Other duties, as assigned (20%).

The ideal candidate will possess the ability to think strategically, to develop and implement integrated marketing and communications plans; to meet deadlines and work under pressure; to communicate effectively with senior administrators, faculty and staff in a persuasive, beneficial, diplomatic and constructive manner; oversee and guide a team with a wide range of areas of expertise; effectively work with a diverse range of individuals and work as part of a team in a large organization with multiple areas of focus. Additionally, the ideal candidate must have strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, including knowledge of Associated Press and University style guidelines; written and verbal communication skills, and strong work ethic. The ideal candidate must have a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field; master’s is preferred. 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in a complex organization, preferably in a higher education setting. Five to 10 years of experience managing others in the marketing and/or communications field.
