Assistant Professor - Geomatics

The Department of Geography at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for one tenure-stream appointment in Geomatics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin on July 1, 2019. The appointment will be at UTM, which has a strong interdisciplinary commitment to teaching and research, a multicultural student body of 14,000 students, and a modern, spacious campus.

Applicants must have a PhD in Geography Information Science (GIS) and or Remote Sensing (RS) by the time of their appointment or shortly thereafter with demonstrated excellence in integrating GIS and/or RS into, Physical Geography, Human Geography, Environmental Sciences or closely related disciplines. The successful candidate will conduct research in computational analysis of spatial data, web/mobile mapping, data mining, machine learning, and geographic information retrieval, in support of addressing societal and/or environmental challenges. Excellence in research and teaching is required. It is expected that applicants conduct innovative research at the highest international level, with a demonstrated ability to build a successful, independent and externally-funded research program that will expand and complement our current research strengths. Applicants will have an emerging record of scholarly accomplishments including publications in leading journals, or a high quality research pipeline, and will provide evidence of excellence as demonstrated in presentations at significant conferences, research awards, research statement and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through a teaching dossier that includes a teaching statement, course evaluations and selected course materials that directly support and illustrate the teaching statement, as well as strong letters of reference. 

The successful applicant will teach undergraduate courses at the University of Toronto Mississauga and will also become a full member of the Tri-campus graduate department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto. Undergraduate teaching responsibilities will include courses in spatial databases, web mapping, programming, and quantitative methods at all levels of study. The successful candidate is expected to take an active role in bringing innovation and creativity to the development of our GIS curriculum. Active participation in the UTM Geography and Environment undergraduate programs, as well as in the graduate program of the Department of Geography and Planning is anticipated.
