DEAN, DICKINSON LAW

Pennsylvania State University

Dean, Dickinson Law

Carlisle, Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania State University (“Penn State”) seeks an exceptional individual to serve as the next dean of Dickinson Law. Dickinson Law is one of the nation’s oldest law schools and will celebrate the 185th anniversary of its founding in 2019. It is also an important part of Penn State, one of the world’s preeminent research universities. Penn State is the land-grant University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with its administrative hub in University Park and 24 campuses across the state, including three in Pennsylvania’s capital region: Dickinson Law (located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania), Penn State Harrisburg, and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, home of the University’s College of Medicine. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University, the Dickinson Law dean serves as its leader and as the principal academic and administrative officer of the school.

The dean’s position provides an exciting leadership opportunity to integrate research with teaching and service, practice with theory, and respect for tradition with enthusiasm for innovation. The position provides an outstanding opportunity for a talented and entrepreneurial individual who can lead a dynamic and dedicated group of faculty, staff, and students who have a proven record of success in developing attorneys ready to practice in an evolving world. Dickinson Law’s faculty, staff, and students are supported by an involved and accomplished alumni base and a premier research university. The next dean will be charged with leading an exceptional and robust law school; articulating and communicating Dickinson Law’s distinctive qualities; developing and diversifying the school’s revenue streams; ensuring the School continues to recruit, train, and place high-quality students who are profession-ready upon graduation; leveraging and enhancing collaborations with other Penn State units; and fostering transparent communication channels with faculty, students, staff, and alumni.

Dickinson Law seeks an experienced and creative leader familiar with global trends affecting graduate and professional legal education. The exemplary candidate will be an excellent scholar with academic credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor, an accomplished administrator inspired by pioneering and interdisciplinary education, and a colleague committed to joining and supporting a diverse and inclusive law school community. The ideal candidate also will have the aptitude and willingness to spearhead significant fundraising efforts.

The University, through the provost, has appointed a Search Advisory Committee, chaired by Susan Welch, dean of the College of the Liberal Arts, and has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search consulting firm, to assist in the search. Review of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Nominations, inquiries, and applications, including a letter of interest describing the individual’s qualifications for the position and curriculum vitae, should be sent in confidence to:
