The University of Rhode Island (URI), the state’s flagship land- and sea-grant research institution, seeks a visionary, strategic, and forward-looking leader to serve as Dean of the College of Health Sciences (CHS). This is an exceptional opportunity for an innovative individual to help chart the evolution of a college of diverse disciplines focused on improving health outcomes for communities across the state and the globe. With a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, clinical care, and service, the Dean will collaborate with senior leadership, faculty, students, and staff to lead the College into its next chapter.

 

The Dean will join the URI community at an exciting time as recently appointed President Marc Parlange embarks on a bold strategy to extend and amplify the University’s presence as a leading research institution. In addition to working closely with university leadership, the Dean will be tasked with assisting in the implementation of a new university-wide strategic plan (Focus URI) and developing a new aligning strategic vision for the College of Health Sciences.

 

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the College and is responsible for the management of its resources, including faculty and staff, physical facilities, and budget. The College is home to over 98 faculty members whose commitment to over 2,450 undergraduate and 260 graduate students fuels their teaching and acclaimed research. The College of Health Sciences features eight academic programs and departments. It houses several on-site labs, clinics, and centers where students work alongside faculty doing research, observation, and valuable clinical experience.

 

The Dean will transition the College into its next phase of growth. Key in this phase is uniting the departments under a common shared vision; connecting the College to the other entities on campus; showcasing current teaching, clinical, and research talent within the College; expanding academic programming in a variety of disciplines in the region’s workforce needs; strategically growing research and scholarship; developing and strengthening academic, research, clinical, and public service partnerships; enhancing the College’s commitment to building a community that fosters, celebrates, and appreciates diversity and inclusion; representing the College externally to raise its profile in the community; and attracting new financial resources to the College.

 

The successful candidate will be a champion for teaching, clinical work, and scholarship, have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, high energy, a deep commitment to diversity, and a personal style that engenders communication, accessibility, trust, and respect. The Dean must have an appreciation and passion for the mission of higher education at a public, land-grant research university.
