Florida State University (FSU) seeks a new Dean of the College of Fine Arts to partner with the College’s faculty, staff, and students to lead the institution in its continued pursuit of excellence.

THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS

The Florida State University College of Fine Arts is a place where learning and creativity are nurtured through instruction, research, and practice. The College is a close-knit community of faculty, students, and professionals that functions as an art and design conservatory and liberal arts hybrid within a major research university. It is home to a unique combination of visual arts, performing art, and design studios, classrooms, performance spaces, and museums. The current student enrollment encompasses nearly 950 undergraduate and 300 graduate students, working to become successful artists, designers, researchers, and professionals in their fields. The College is comprised of the School of Dance, the School of Theatre, the Department of Interior Architecture and Design, the Department of Art, the Department of Art Education, and the Department of Art History. It is supported by 150 staff, 95 full-time and 55 adjunct faculty, and a budget of approximately $16 million.

The College also houses several non-academic units including the Museum of Fine Arts (MoFa), the Facility for Arts Research (FAR), and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC). Many of the College’s programs rank among the most respected in the nation and feature specialized programs that leverage relationships between departments and museums to enrich the degree-based curriculum. POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Fine Arts. The Dean engages and works with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and represents the College and the University in various professional settings and ceremonial contexts. The Dean also provides leadership for programmatic and university-wide accreditation and assessment efforts. The Dean is responsible for managing and overseeing the fiscal, human, and physical resources of the College. In effectively doing so, the Dean will ensure the proper stewardship of the means by which the College fulfills its mission of creating, teaching, learning, and serving with passion and intellectual rigor.  In addition, the Dean develops new revenue streams and engages in fundraising activities to contribute to the College’s ability to realize its mission.

The Dean is responsible for building on the strong reputations of the six academic units and multiple entities that comprise the College of Fine Arts and to formulate and articulate a compelling and unified vision that highlights the unique aspects of each department and school. As an academic leader and innovator, the Dean supports the exploration of new policies and procedures to ensure and improve the College’s successful operations. The Dean is a leading voice on innovative instructional and educational programming, as well as exploring novel ways of supporting and increasing student and faculty creative activity, scholarship, and research. By working closely and collaboratively across all units, the Dean fosters a strong sense of unity and esprit-de-corps amongst the faculty and staff to not only attract and recruit the best individuals to the College, but also to retain and develop those therein. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will possess:

  • An earned advanced degree from an accredited institution and the ability to receive the rank of full professor within one of the units of the College of Fine Arts;
  • A track record of successful creative activity and/or research;
  • Demonstrated record of administrative experience in fiscal and personnel management;
  • Experience with strategic planning and outcomes assessment;
  • A commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration within a college, as well as throughout the university;
  • An awareness and understanding of the national trends and issues currently impacting the fine, applied, and performing arts in higher education.
