Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) seeks a strategic and collaborative information technology leader to serve as its Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (VPIT/CIO). This is a unique opportunity for a visionary IT leader to spearhead transformational change through leveraging technology at a premier land grant, research intensive university that is experiencing tremendous growth including the development of an Innovation Campus set to open in 2024.

Virginia Tech offers about 280 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 37,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students across the Commonwealth of Virginia and manages a research portfolio of close to $600 million. It has a 2,600-acre main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, and a growing presence in the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan Area, Roanoke, and other areas across the commonwealth. Through experiential learning, future-focused research, and an inclusive, spirited culture, Virginia Tech strives to accomplish the charge of its mottoUt Prosim(That I May Serve).

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and serving as a member of the President's Council, the VPIT/CIO will provide leadership and vision for IT across the university. Collaborating and communicating with senior leaders, faculty, peers, and institutional staff and as an Executive Sponsor of Virginia Tech's IT Transformation Program, the VPIT/CIO will work to optimally align IT with the goals and strategic direction of the university. The VPIT/CIO will play a key role in optimizing the IT infrastructure to improve the user experience of students, faculty, researchers, staff, administrators, alumni, and visitors while continuing to enable a high level of customer service. Early initiatives will include advancing the research computing environment, selecting and implementing the next generation enterprise resource planning (ERP), and ensuring ongoing investments in cybersecurity. The VPIT/CIO will lead the continued enhancement of the IT enterprise by implementing appropriate technologies and security protocols to ensure that Virginia Tech effectively meets its objectives in education, research, and outreach.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and mission-driven IT leader with a demonstrated track record of establishing high-performing teams and elevating IT in a complex and growing academic institution where shared governance is valued. The VPIT/CIO will be a collaborative partner who can build trusting relationships with constituents across the university and drive programs forward by garnering credibility and consensus. The VPIT/CIO will be an innovative leader with knowledge of new trends in technology supporting education, research and outreach, a strong understanding of IT security protocols, and has demonstrated the ability to lead change effectively, preferably in a research university. The successful candidate will also have strong financial and contract management skills and business acumen to manage a complex division.
