Vice President and Director of Research

Vice President and Director of Research

The W.E. Upjohn Institute (“Institute”) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President and Director of Research (“VPDR”).

The Institute is a private, not-for-profit, nonpartisan, independent research organization devoted to finding and promoting solutions to unemployment and related challenges. Since its founding in 1932, the Institute has developed into one of the world’s leading independent labor research organizations, seeking to understand the causes of unemployment and develop strategies and solutions to alleviate its effects. With approximately 120 staff members, the Institute is headquartered in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Reporting to President Michael Horrigan, the VPDR is responsible for creating and implementing a strategic vision by working closely with staff to determine the direction of the Institute’s research. The VPDR provides direct supervision and support to the staff of the Research Department, which currently consists of 14 researchers and support staff, and will also have the opportunity to maintain a personal research agenda. The incumbent works collaboratively with both external stakeholders and all Institute staff.

The ideal candidate will bring expertise in and passion for the Institute’s areas of focus and will demonstrate a deep understanding of the national dialogue around issues of labor and unemployment. While embodying intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm, the successful candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarship and a Ph.D. in economics, public policy, or a related field along with at least eight years of relevant work experience. They will also possess excellent organizational skills, experience with change management, and the capacity to provide intellectual leadership and empowering support to their fellow researchers. Serving as a strategic member of the Institute’s leadership team, the next VPDR will help shape the future of research at the Institute; increase external funding; champion diversity, equity, and inclusion; and expand the Institute’s visibility.
