President and Chief Executive Officer

President and Chief Executive Officer

The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) invites nominations and applications for President and Chief Executive Officer to begin, ideally, in November 2018. MHEC (pronounced "mek") is one of four statutorily-created interstate compacts for higher education in the United States. The 12-member states are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin; and their institutions of higher education have a combined student population of more than four million.

MHEC is governed by a 60-member Commission, 5 from each state, of legislators, higher education leaders, and governors' representatives. Through collaborative efforts the Compact utilizes the collective expertise and influence of policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and other leaders to provide value to member states and their institutions of higher education, and to maintain affordability and maximize return on investment for both students and taxpayers. Additionally, MHEC aims to build capacity within member states to leverage postsecondary education institutions and programs as strategic assets in advancing economic and community development and improving quality of life for the region's citizens.

Candidates are expected to have earned a bachelor's degree; an advanced degree is strongly preferred. They should have at least five years of experience in, and a track record of success in, a senior leadership position; and demonstrate progressive levels of professional growth and leadership responsibilities, as well as a record of continuous improvement. The successful candidate must be open to new ideas and demonstrate experience, knowledge, and success in the arenas of both state government and higher education and familiarity with their respective issues, constraints, challenges and opportunities. Good political instincts as well as experience in leading change are highly valued. The president must be willing and able to travel frequently throughout the states, be comfortable initiating new relationships, and promote the work and value of the Compact to many constituents. The president must be sensitive to the political and social culture of the Midwest and embrace its changing demographics and aspirations for more inclusiveness.
