Position description

Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health

The Department of Medicine at University of California, San Diego, Department of Medicine ( ) is actively recruiting to fill the tenured position of Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health ( ).

The Department of Medicine and Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health are committed to academic excellence and diversity across the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated passion for delivery of outstanding patient care and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity.

The UCSD Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health division consists of over 80 faculty and 130 staff members. Clinical care, research, and teaching by faculty members occur at UC San Diego Health and the VA San Diego Medical Center. Divisional faculty receive over $20 million in grant funding each year, including $8.5 million from the NIH. The Division has innovative basic, translational, clinical and epidemiology research programs in infectious disease across many infectious pathogens including viruses (e.g., HIV, SARS-CoV-2, herpesviruses, hepatitis B, C, and D), bacteria (e.g., mycobacteria, enteric bacteria, bacterial antimicrobial resistance), fungi (e.g., coccidioidomycosis, aspergillosis, resistant Candida), parasites (e.g., toxoplasmosis, trypanosomiasis, malaria). Novel therapies are also being developed in several areas, including antiviral drug development in our AntiViral Research Center (AVRC) and the use of bacteriophages for antimicrobial resistant bacterial and mycobacterial pathogens in our Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH).

The Division also has an outstanding general ID fellowship with clinical educator and research tracks. These fellowship tracks are supported in part by three T32 funded fellowship programs for general infectious diseases, HIV and other pandemic viruses and epidemiology to support the research development of trainees.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership, teaching, research and patient care.

The appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate's background and experience. Series will include 50% Ladder Rank / 50% In-Residence with secured extramural funding or 100% Ladder Rank.

Basic qualifications (Required at Time of Application)
Candidates must have a MD or equivalent or MD/PhD with an emphasis relevant to Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health. Candidates must have, or be eligible for, a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California and must be Board certified or eligible in Infectious Diseases.

Candidates must have a track record of outstanding research, a track record of excellent teaching and successful leadership experience. Candidates must also have national recognition in clinical, translational, and/or basic research with a history of extramural research funding and publications in high impact journals.

Preferred qualifications
Candidates with a vision for how to sustain and grow all facets of the Division's missions as well as fostering a collaborative and collegial work environment are preferred.

Candidates with expertise in clinical HIV research are especially encouraged to apply.
