ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN ANCIENT STUDIES / CLASSICS

SCRIPPS COLLEGE, CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA

TENURE TRACK POSITION IN ANCIENT STUDIES/CLASSICS TO START FALL 2024

The Department of Ancient Studies/Classics at Scripps College, a women’s liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, is looking to hire an Assistant Professor (tenure track) beginning July 1, 2024. We seek a broadly trained candidate with a critical and creative eye on the study of antiquity and its connections with today’s world. Specialization is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose study of the ancient world extends beyond Greece and Rome (e.g., Ancient Near East) and/or whose work engages with reception studies. All candidates should demonstrate excellence in the teaching of Latin and/or ancient Greek. In addition to mentoring students, supervising senior theses, and service at the college and in the department, the course load is 2-2. The department at Scripps forms part of the intercollegiate program in Ancient Studies/Classics at The Claremont Colleges (Pomona, Pitzer, Claremont McKenna). Participation in the Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities, a series of required courses for first- and second-year students, is expected.

Ph.D. in Ancient Studies/Classics (or a relevant discipline) is required by July 2024. Evidence of teaching experience and teaching excellence is also requested. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to the College’s goal of improving higher education for underrepresented students. Towards that end, applicants should submit a brief statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Applicants should submit the following materials online: cover letter, CV, three letters of recommendation, writing sample (no more than 30 pages), DEI statement, and teaching portfolio (including two sample syllabi for courses taught or planned, and evidence of excellence in teaching [e.g., teaching evaluations or related materials]).

The salary for this position will range from $75,384 to $83,760 and will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

For matters other than the submission of material, contact David Roselli, Chair, Ancient Studies/Classics Search Committee, at AncientStudiesSearch@Scrippscollege.edu. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.
