Organizational Overview:

The Department of Population Medicine (DPM) at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor who can develop and lead an independent research program in pharmacoepidemiology and real-world evidence to join its Division of Therapeutics Research and Infectious Disease Epidemiology (TIDE).

The DPM is a research and teaching collaboration between Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a Point32Health company, and Harvard Medical School. The Institute’s mission is to improve healthcare delivery and population health through research and education, in partnership with health plans, delivery systems, and public health agencies. As the nation's first medical school appointing department based on a health plan, we are strategically positioned to improve population health and healthcare delivery locally, nationally, and internationally. The Institute employs over 300 individuals with a diverse collection of talents, expertise, and backgrounds, working with hundreds of institutional and individual collaborators around the globe. DPM is multi-disciplinary, with a research and teaching portfolio spanning a range of clinical, educational, and health service areas. Clinicians may include part-time practice in their activities. Joint appointment in a second Harvard Medical School department or in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health may be appropriate.

TIDE’s work in pharmacoepidemiology includes serving as the operations center for the FDA Sentinel System, a national medical product safety surveillance system, population-based randomized and observational studies of comparative safety and effectiveness of medical products, development of privacy-protecting distributed analytic methods for multi-center studies, development of database and networking capabilities to support efficient uses of disparate real-world data, and descriptive studies of the use and appropriateness of use of medical products. TIDE also has a robust portfolio of research in identification and prevention of healthcare associated infections, and in public health surveillance. Activities within TIDE are funded by federal agencies, foundations, and commercial organizations.



The faculty member will be expected to initiate and lead investigator-initiated research projects. They will also be expected to be involved in the Sentinel System and other collaborative research and public health surveillance activities within TIDE. Expertise in designing and leading large population-based real-world data studies and good leadership and collaboration skills are essential. Demonstrated record of obtaining research funding is highly desirable but not required.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in epidemiology or pharmacoepidemiology, a M.D. with a M.P.H., or comparable advanced degree(s);
  • A productive record of peer-reviewed publications;
  • Experience and expertise in research using real-world data;
  • Demonstrated record of obtaining investigator-initiated research funding;
  • Ability to lead and work in multi-disciplinary teams; and,
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

Besides their principal research activities, the faculty member will also be expected to spend a portion of time participating in the broader mission of the Department as follows:

  • Teach and mentor medical students, graduate students, and/or research fellows;
  • Establish and maintain collegial and productive contacts with other researchers and educators at the university and with existing external research partnerships;
  • Contribute to departmental and medical school administration as a member of committees; and,
  • Maintain a small clinical practice, if appropriate.
