Dean of the College of Public Health
The University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Public Health. The Dean serves as the chief administrative and academic officer of the College, reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
UGA is ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University’s main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton.
UGA was founded in 1785 by the Georgia General Assembly as the birthplace of public higher education in America. UGA employs approximately 1,800 full-time instructional faculty and more than 7,600 full-time staff. The University’s enrollment exceeds 36,000 students, including over 27,500 undergraduates and over 8,500 graduate and professional students. Academic programs reside in 17 schools and colleges, as well as a medical partnership with Augusta University housed on the UGA Health Sciences Campus in Athens. The College of Public Health at UGA promotes health in human populations, addresses environmental health issues, and prevents disease and injury in Georgia, the United States and globally through innovative research, exemplary education and engaged service. Founded in 2005, the College of Public Health is comprised of four academic departments and four research institutes. The UGA College of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and was re-accredited by CEPH in September 2014 for a seven-year term. Located on the UGA Health Sciences Campus, the College offers BS, MPH, MS, DrPH and PhD degrees with concentrations and certificates in biostatistics, disaster management, environmental health, epidemiology, gerontology, global health, health promotion and behavior, infectious disease epidemiology, public health, and health policy and management. Graduates from the College of Public Health typically go on to a diverse range of careers, including medicine, health education, emergency management, public health policy, environmental health science and social work. The College is nationally known for its work related to aging, disaster preparedness, evidence-based practice, global infectious disease, workplace health, economic evaluation, community-based participatory research and health informatics.
The College has approximately 70 full-time faculty and 140 staff that serve an enrollment of around 1,000 students per year. During its first decade, the College established a highly productive research culture with total research funding in excess of $30 million. The 58-acre UGA Health Sciences Campus located near downtown Athens has become a central location for the College of Public Health. The College collaborates with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Public Health and agencies in Atlanta, as well as with national and international public health institutions.
The Dean will provide energetic and visionary leadership, as well as principled administrative guidance and advocacy for the mission of the College in teaching, research, and public service/outreach in public health. The Dean's responsibilities include overall responsibility for leadership of the College; strategic planning and analysis of College operations; program development for departments and institutes in the College; budget development; fundraising and alumni relations; faculty recruitment; serving as a liaison with department heads, institute directors and College staff; representing the College to the University administration; collaborating with other colleges at UGA; providing leadership in guiding, engaging and building partnerships with entire populations proactively to promote health in the State of Georgia and beyond.
Candidates must have a terminal degree and a distinguished record of scholarship and qualify for tenure at the full professor level at the University of Georgia. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to developing an outstanding research agenda in public health; a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching; be able to manage a diverse college with multiple departments; be a strong internal manager with good budgetary skills and the ability to work in a collaborative and collegial manner with a diverse faculty, staff, and students; and be a successful fundraiser, working with foundations and individual donors as well as encouraging externally supported scholarship.
