Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno seeks an Engineering and Fabrication Librarian. This newly envisioned position will report to the Head of the DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library and serve as the lead for the makerspace instruction program and as liaison librarian to the College of Engineering.

As lead for the makerspace instruction program, this librarian will work with teaching faculty and other librarians to develop, implement, and assess tailored learning opportunities for students from all disciplines utilizing resources in our DeLaMare Library Makerspace. Our makerspace instruction program emphasizes the incorporation of maker competencies and design thinking as transdisciplinary skills that support classroom student learning outcomes. This position will work closely with the Makerspace Specialist and Head of the DeLaMare Library in developing and carrying out the strategic direction of the makerspace, including resource acquisition, new services development, and marketing and outreach.

As liaison to the College of Engineering, this position will be a member of the Libraries' liaison librarian program that emphasizes engaging information literacy instruction, in-depth research support for both faculty and students, and active engagement in campus outreach activities to promote the Libraries and build partnerships. They will provide research assistance in areas such as mechanical engineering, electrical and biomedical engineering, computer science and engineering, chemical and material sciences engineering, and civil and environmental engineering.

The Libraries value excellent oral and written communication skills, a strong service orientation, a willingness to experiment with new methods and technologies, and a collaborative approach to meeting user needs. This is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position that requires scholarly activity and publication and service on professional and university committees. The Engineering and Fabrication Librarian is expected to:
  • Provide in-depth research consultations regarding specialized engineering resources, such as those involving scholarly research, standards, and technical reports.
  • Expand the awareness, understanding, and utilization of the makerspace instructional program.
  • Design and conduct curriculum-integrated instructional sessions for the College of Engineering, as well as faculty from other departments wishing to utilize the makerspace. This will include conducting sessions both in-person and online, creating and maintaining LibGuides, and creating effective online instructional materials such as LMS modules and online tutorials.
  • Work with the Makerspace Specialist to update student training curriculum and assist with delivery as necessary.
  • Proactively collaborate with faculty to meet teaching and research objectives and support interdisciplinary initiatives across academic units that require expertise in use of the makerspace or engineering research.
  • Oversee library collections in the liaison areas, respond to faculty and student requests for library materials, and collaborate with other library departments on collections-related issues.
  • Maintain familiarity with recent trends and issues in scholarly communications and research data related to the liaison area, and answer basic questions regarding these issues, such as those related to copyright and research data storage/access.
  • Work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Participate in and extend the DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library's outreach, assessment, and instructional initiatives.


Required Qualifications

ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent

  • Background in and/or familiarity with sources, issues, and trends in STEM research
  • Experience planning and delivering innovative library services and/or information literacy instruction
  • Familiarity with tools that support online learning such as LibGuides and Canvas


Salary

Salary minimum is $67,000. This is a full-time, tenure track faculty position. Appointment may be at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, depending on experience, record of scholarship, service and achievement.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
