Summary of Job Details 

The Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an innovative, forward-looking, service-oriented, and collaborative professional for an exciting opportunity to serve in a newly created position as the Head of Special Collections Processing.  

 

Under the direction of the Director of Resource Acquisition and Discovery Services (ReADS) and working very closely and collaboratively with the Director of Special Research Collections (SRC), curators, and staff in SRC and ReADS, the Head of Special Collections Processing oversees the processing lifecycle of special collection materials, including associated policies, workflows, and processes. The incumbent in this position supervises a highly collaborative team of archival processing specialists, library assistants, and student assistants responsible for the accessioning, processing, and management of archival and printed materials.

 

The Special Collections Processing Unit is a recently established organizational unit responsible for the management of the processing lifecycle of the library's special, unique and distinctive printed and archival collections. The unit was formed by merging the Archival Processing unit, previously situated in the SRC, with the library technical services (ReADS department).  By ensuring holistic coordination of processing and management functions for printed and archival special collections at UCSB, the library's main objective is to gain comprehensive and standardized physical, intellectual, and administrative control of its special collections, including printed and archival materials.  The Head of Special Collections Processing will play a pivotal leadership role in achieving this goal while providing leadership to processing staff and implementing best practices for establishing and maintaining intellectual and physical control of newly acquired and existing backlog materials.

 

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and/or experience.

• Experience processing archival collection materials and/or performing bibliographic description within special collections and/or archives at an academic or research institution or major cultural heritage institution.

• Knowledge of current principles of archival arrangement and description for manuscripts and archival materials.

• Ability to delegate, supervise, and manage change.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Hiring/Budgeted Salary Range: $59,000 - $81,700/yr.

 

Full Salary Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range is $57,800 to $105,600/yr.  The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $59,000 to $81,700/yr..

 

Work Location: UCSB Library - ReADS

Working Days and Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am - 5pm
