Cloud Data Engineer

The Office of Information Technology is recruiting a Cloud Data Engineer to join our Business Intelligence and Analytics team. This position will be responsible for creating and maintaining cloud data lake and data warehouse repositories, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for cross functional teams. The ideal candidate is an experienced data pipeline builder, data scientist and cloud technology expert who enjoys complex data integrations and is quickly able to adapt to changing business requirements. The Cloud Data Engineer will support the Business Intelligence and Analytics team in the collection and delivery of data requirements for the university. They must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of both technical and non-technical staff. They should strive to gain expert knowledge of data systems. This position will be responsible for a ground-up build of data lake/warehouse structures in support of university data needs and should be excited to guide and assist our users on their data journey. This position reports to the Director of Business Intelligence and Analytics.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.

  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet business requirements.

  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

  • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and AWS ‘big data’ technologies.

  • Build data sets to provide actionable insights into student success, HR and staffing needs, financial operations and other key business performance metrics.

  • Work with stakeholders from executive, academic, and functional teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.

  • Ensure secure storage of university data, complying with all local and federal regulations related to university data systems.

  • Work with internal analysts and data scientists to build data structures to support industry-leading analysis of educational data.

  • Ensure data governance best practices are adhered to in the collection, definition and dispersal of institutional data.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field.

  • 5+ years of experience in a Data Engineer role.

  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.

  • Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.

  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.

  • Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management.

  • A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.

  • Experience using the following software/tools:

    • Experience with big data tools: Hadoop, Spark, Kubernetes, Docker, etc.

    • Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases.

    • Familiarity with handling unstructured data sources.

    • Experience with AWS cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, Redshift, S3

    • Experience with object-oriented and statistical programming languages: Python, R, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Higher Education ERP/HCM/HRMS systems is preferred.

 

WORK MODE

  • Hybrid/Remote - Employees hired for this position primarily work remotely with the occasional on-campus presence required with advanced notice. Employees in this role will also be expected to use their best judgment to be on campus when necessary in order to best fulfill the responsibilities of their job descriptions. 

 

SALARY RANGE

$115,000 - $120,000 per annum
