SENIOR ASSOCIATE DEAN & DIRECTOR, OFFICE OF GRADUATE EDUCATION
MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT; Institute) seeks a strategic and operationally-minded leader with a passion for graduate education to become the next Senior Associate Dean and Director of the Office of Graduate Education. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a talented and creative professional to shape the future of graduate education at one of the premier teaching and research institutions in the world.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate and Graduate Education, the Senior Associate Dean will lead efforts to enhance the academic, personal, and professional success and well-being of MIT’s 7000+ graduate students. They will oversee a staff of 26 in the Office of Graduate Education (OGE) and work closely with academic department leadership, faculty, administrators, and other offices, in particular those in student and residential life, that support MIT’s graduate students. At a pivotal moment for graduate education at MIT, the Senior Associate Dean will play a critical role in building a strong, productive relationship with the newly formed graduate student union and in helping to design and implement necessary changes to Institute and departmental systems, policies, and practices.
The mission of the Office of Graduate Education is to support and serve prospective and current graduate students, programs, and schools to make graduate education at MIT empowering, exciting, holistic, and transformative. They do this in a variety of ways, with responsibility for:
- Institute policies and procedures and support to faculty governance committees;
- Student support and well-being;
- Central support to academic departments, labs, and centers;
- Fellowships, funding, and financial well-being;
- Diversity programming; and
- Community-building and student leadership.
The ideal Senior Associate Dean will be an enthusiastic and effective champion for MIT graduate students and graduate education, advocating across the Institute; advising senior leaders such as the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor; and representing MIT in global, national, regional, and local networks and venues.
