Virginia Tech

Dean, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine

Roanoke, Virginia

Virginia Tech welcomes applications and nominations for the next dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). The school, founded ten years ago through a partnership between the university and Carilion Clinic, has innovated the training of next generation physicians through its cutting-edge curriculum and approach to medical education. As the school transitions from a private 501(c)3, the result of a public-private partnership between Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic, to one fully integrated within a leading, comprehensive university, the next dean will leverage the strengths and resources of the school, the university, and its partner, Carilion Clinic, to further a shared vision for a thriving health sciences community.

The dean will join Virginia Tech at an exciting time of growth and innovation. The university seeks to build on the momentum generated by a string of recent successes, including growth in research that places it among the top-40 research universities in the nation, the successful completion of a $1.1 billion capital campaign, and the implementation of strategic initiatives to further develop transdisciplinary collaborations, including the health sciences.

Reporting to the provost and serving as an integral member of the university’s leadership team, the dean will facilitate strong collaboration between the Carilion Clinic and the university, recruit and support a strong faculty and staff, sustain a high-quality, innovative approach to medical education, and will cultivate a culture of invention. He or she will further the school’s relationship with the community of Roanoke and the broader region through active involvement and philanthropic efforts. In addition, the next dean will play a key role in championing the college externally with donors, alumni, and state and national leaders.

The successful candidate will have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent medical degree, will meet any clinical credentialing or privileging requirements of Carilion Clinic, and will bring a successful record of leadership, preferably in an academic setting. The successful candidate will also possess a demonstrated track record in advancing inclusion and diversity.

A representative search committee has been convened to conduct the search and to recommend finalists to the provost. The university is assisted in the recruitment by the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller. All inquiries, nominations, and applications will remain confidential and should be directed to:
