ROLE of the POSITION

The Health Educator works to develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of health and mental health programs and initiatives with a focus on alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, mental health awareness, and general wellness. This staff member utilizes evidence-based programing and assesses the measurable impact of such wellness programs and training with an overarching goal of providing students with informed decision-making skills that enhance their personal wellness and academic performance. The Health Educator develops, implements, and assesses wellness marketing campaigns including the use of social and print media. The staff member also collaborates with campus stakeholders to implement a comprehensive approach to promote the health and safety of students. This position also provides oversight and coordination of prevention programming as well as hires trains, and supervises students, interns, and peer educators. The Health Educator meets regularly with the Student Wellness Outreach Team and to develop, implement, and evaluated programing to ensure it addresses current campus needs and is aligned with departmental and unit goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education/Promotion, Health Communication, Public Health, or a closely related field with health/wellness promotion experience from a regionally accredited college or university and Must have at least 1 year of professional experience in health/wellness education or promotion. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment. All candidates must pass a background screening.

Demonstrate knowledge of the following: 1) health and mental health promotion, behavior change and population-based theories and models; 2) evidence-based wellness promotion programs/initiatives in a university or college setting; 3) knowledge of alcohol and other drugs content and prevention strategies; 4) knowledge of mental health issues among college students; 5) demonstrated cultural competence and inclusiveness in working with populations of diverse cultures and identities as well as in addressing issues of diversity and social justice; and 6) application of appropriate research principles and methods and program evaluation in wellness promotion.

Demonstrate excellent skills in the following: 1) utilizing behavior change theories and models in the development and implementation of evidence-based programs and initiatives; 2) implementing and evaluating population-based prevention initiatives; 3) working with a variety of educational methods including presentations, trainings, small group facilitation, and individual consultation sessions; 4) critically reviewing health-related literature and synthesizing such information to develop health promotion initiatives and educational materials for diverse groups of college students; 5) maintaining excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; 6) solving problems using critical thinking and good judgement; 7) managing multiple projects and duties simultaneously; 8) professionally managing confidential or sensitive information with professional discretion; 9) utilizing health communication and social marketing; 10) using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation design; 11) using social media platforms to promote student wellness; 12) collaborating with other professionals in a dynamic team environment; and 13) using data-driven, program assessment and evaluation to inform future programing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Health Education/Promotion, Health Communication, Public Health or closely related field, plus 1 year of professional experience. Experience as a Graduate Assistant may apply. Preference for experience working with college students, mental health knowledge, alcohol and other drugs prevention programming, and proficiency in the use of social media for wellness promotion. CHES preferred. CPR/First Aid Provider and Instructor preferred.

SALARY RANGE

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
