Executive Vice President for Health Affairs

The University of Kentucky invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Vice President for Health Affairs. The University of Kentucky (UK) is seeking a highly accomplished, dynamic and inspirational leader to become the next Executive Vice President for Health Affairs (EVPHA) to lead UK HealthCare through its next phase of growth. The new EVPHA inherits a rapidly evolving healthcare system well positioned for continued success in the blended missions of quality clinical care, teaching, research and community engagement. This position truly represents one of the most exciting leadership opportunities in U.S. healthcare today and the right leader will be poised to have tremendous impact locally, regionally, and nationally.

The EVPHA is the senior executive for health affairs at the University of Kentucky. As such, the EVPHA establishes the leadership standards, strategic direction, and performance expectations for the organization and its officials. Specifically, the EVPHA provides the leadership, strategic direction, visioning, future planning, and coordination for the overall education, research, community engagement, and clinical delivery enterprises across UK Healthcare.

The EVPHA must be a strategic partner with the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration on financial and administrative operations, and with Provost on academic issues related to the engagement with all health-related professional colleges. Additionally, the EVPHA shall be a strategic partner with the Dean of the College of Medicine; both leaders are expected to operate collaboratively in the delivery of the research, education, community engagement and clinical delivery enterprises.

As one of three most senior executives (Executive Vice Presidents and Provost) at UK who report to the President, the EVPHA serves as an important member of the President’s Cabinet, which is responsible for the entire University enterprise. Therefore, a critical role for the EVPHA is to conduct himself/herself as a leader not only in matters of health affairs, but also across the entire University. With the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration and the Provost, the EVPHA works collaboratively across the campus, its varied programs, and within its leadership structure to assure a harmonious, collaborative, and cohesive leadership environment.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree (Ph.D., D.P.H., M.D., D.N.P., J.D., M.P.H., M.H.A, M.B.A., M.P.A. or related degree) and successful senior leadership experience in a complex academic medical center or other similarly complex health-related organization with a history of strong and consistent financial performance.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional skills in all elements of healthcare administration, including, but not limited to hospital operations, physician relations, strategic planning, academic service line development, patient care, finance, academic medicine, physician joint-venture development, information technology, human resources, government relations, marketing, and vendor/payer contract negotiations.

The ideal candidate will also have financial and business acumen with the strength and judgment to effectively utilize available resources, faculty, and staff.

Finally, the ideal candidate will be comfortable with and able to work well in ambiguous and matrixed environments, and will have a clear history of success in building and maintaining strategic collaborations.
