About the University
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a research university and academic health center that discovers, teaches and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social and economic benefit of Birmingham, the state and beyond. UAB is internationally renowned for its intensely collaborative culture that has ‐‐ for nearly five decades ‐‐ produced continual breakthroughs in education, healthcare, research and service. With over 20,000 students, UAB provides a student‐centered, collaborative learning experience to prepare diverse students for rewarding careers and lives that benefit society and our regional and global economy. In recent years, UAB has experienced a surge in enrollment that spans every school and the Honors College. In fall 2017, UAB had another year of record‐high enrollment (20,902) and its largest freshman class ever (2,299). The Princeton Review for Diversity has recognized the institution, and UAB continues to be one of the most diverse universities in the nation. The student body is 38.62 percent minority, and minority students make up 44.53 percent of the freshman class. The student population is 21.22 percent black and 61.21 percent female. UAB has 973 international students enrolled this fall, who along with 628 international faculty, staff and visiting scholars on campus, represent more than 100 countries around the world. In addition, UAB offers exceptional graduate and professional programs that prepare diverse students to lead, teach, conduct research, provide professional services, become the prominent scholars and societal leaders of the future, and contribute to our region's and our nation’s prosperity. UAB is home to schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Optometry, Public Health, Health Professions, Engineering, Business, Education and the College of Arts & Sciences. The faculty, staff, and students of UAB have generated unique ideas and groundbreaking solutions to address the issues and challenges of a changing society.
In the four decades since its inception, this young, dynamic university has thrived with boldness and innovation that have pushed the frontiers in science, medicine, business, education, the arts and the humanities – and has garnered national and international respect. UAB had research expenditures of more than $510 million last year, ranking 18th among public universities and 34th overall in federally financed research. In funding from the National Institutes of Health, UAB ranks 10th among public universities with $243 million. Many of its roughly 2,000 faculty conduct research in university‐wide interdisciplinary research centers that span more than one academic school at UAB. UAB’s interdisciplinary culture presents its faculty with an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from other schools, departments and disciplines who have comparable or complementary research interests. At the same time, UAB has reached out and collaborated with its community and state, spurring phenomenal progress over a half century. UAB’s growth as a world‐renowned research university and medical center has driven the social, cultural and economic revival of Birmingham. UAB is Alabama’s largest single employer, with an annual economic impact exceeding $7 billion, and continues partnering to improve education, health care and quality or life throughout the community and state.
Every individual school is engaged in important service programs, locally and globally, and service‐learning is deeply engrained across the curricula. UAB has been named for ten consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a university can achieve for its commitment to civic engagement and service‐learning. The university continues to strengthen the historic partnership with Birmingham through shared strategic planning and collaboration on the development of “Innovate Birmingham” aimed at growing a robust, technology‐based economy for the region.
The University of Alabama System
The University of Alabama System consists of three doctoral research universities: The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham and The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The System is governed by The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama as stipulated by the Alabama Constitution. The Board of Trustees created the present multi‐campus structure in 1969, and each of the component institutions has a unique mission that is consistent with the broader mission of the System.

The School of Dentistry
Physically located in the heart of the medical center, the UAB School of Dentistry’s mission is to optimize oral health locally and globally. The School has a reputation for its contemporary holistic approach to dentistry and patient-centered care. With an immersive student experience, integrated basic and clinical sciences, depth and breadth of clinical opportunities, modern clinical facilities, leading edge dental technologies, integrated community clinical rotations, and robust community-involvement, the School provides one of the highest student procedural experiences in the country and consistently produces award-winning students and successful graduates with strong success on national board and licensure examinations.
The School of Dentistry has approximately 240 DMD students (including DMD/PhD, DMD/MBA, and DMD/MPH dual degree students), over 40 International Dentist students, 110 postgraduates, and 20 undergraduate students. With more than 80 full-time equivalent faculty and 143 full-time equivalent staff; diversity, equity and inclusion play a key factor in assuring a great place to work, learn and be a patient. The mission is accomplished through seven academic departments, four academic divisions and numerous resources to support students and faculty, including eight administrative units, three endowed chairs, approximately nine endowed professorships, and three scholars.
Proudly serving as a multidisciplinary research leader, the UAB School of Dentistry continues to improve oral health through the funded research of our faculty. UAB School of Dentistry ranks 2nd in the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) funding rankings and is home to the National Dental Practice Based Research Network and two University-wide research centers--the Microbiome Center and Global Center for Craniofacial Oral and Dental Disorders.
The School’s award-winning faculty are national and international leaders who serve on governmental health care committees and task forces and in leadership positions within the University. They also serve in prominent roles within the American Dental Association (ADA), the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the American and International Association for Dental Research (AADR/IADR), the Alabama Dental Association (ALDA), and within numerous other dental professional organizations.
The UAB Dentistry clinical enterprise provides expert care and the most board-certified specialists under one roof in Alabama. Clinics include a Limited Care walk-in clinic for dental emergencies and limited, non-emergency treatment, a Comprehensive Care multidisciplinary student clinic with services from cosmetic dentistry to operative dentistry and restorations. For more complex dental care, resident specialty clinics include Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, and Advanced General Dentistry. A new Wellness Clinic promotes overall well-being by offering comprehensive oral health risk assessments and screenings for major health threats in addition to routine dental care. A partnership with Children’s Rehabilitation Services of Alabama and Medicaid has resulted in the creation of the UAB Craniofacial Orthodontia Disorders clinic serving the needs of patients with Craniofacial Deformities within the State of Alabama. A visually beautiful multidisciplinary faculty practice provides opportunities for faculty to enhance their skills and supplement their income.
The Dean of the School of Dentistry is the chief executive and academic officer of the School, collaborating with the faculty and staff in overseeing the quality of its academic programs; stewarding and enhancing the school’s fiscal, capital and human resources; and playing a prominent role in building partnerships. The Dean reports to the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. The Dean provides leadership to the faculty and staff in all matters relating to curriculum and program development; accreditation, assessment and evaluation; recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students; and, research and scholarship and is supported by his/her faculty and Associate and Assistant Deans. The Dean leads the School of Dentistry in a research-focused public university, thereby requiring experience with all aspects of research, knowledge of the scientific method, and understanding of federal and foundation grant processes. The Dean will also actively pursue collaborations with other schools, corporations, industry partners, National Institutes of Health (NIH), common resources, and other organizations to fulfill the research mission. Finally, establishing a strong and supportive alumni leading to meaningful endowments, scholarship opportunities and UAB capital and core infrastructure gifts are required.
Key Opportunities, Responsibilities and Challenges:
- Provide strategic oversight and expertise for all aspects of the School, including positive representation of the School within the UAB enterprise and beyond;
- Lead the strategic planning, growth and development of the School;
- Expand and enhance the strength of the research programs within the School, building on existing strengths and creating new areas of research excellence;
- Ensure the financial health of the School and be proficient in business processes and entrepreneurial endeavors;
- Build a strong, innovative, and sustainable clinical enterprise based on clinical and research excellence and clinical best practices;
- Lead and assist in securing extramural and philanthropic resources necessary for the growth and improvement of the School;
- Participate in university-wide innovative efforts to create a more efficient, effective, cohesive and high‐quality academic enterprise;
- Develop close, cooperative relationships with other units on campus to cultivate a community of mutual respect advanced by meaningful interaction;
- Build a strong network of community alliances and support and draw upon this network to shape the future of the School across its missions;
- Ensure that the School has effective programs of student recruitment, advising and student success activities;
- Manage recruitment and retention of key personnel for expansion and innovation of future clinical, research, and teaching endeavors;
- Communicate the values, mission and accomplishments of the School of Dentistry and the University effectively to all major stakeholder groups including students, faculty, alumni, community leaders, and dental colleagues;
- Develop a forward-looking plan for the dental school based upon realistic and data-based projection for dentistry and dental education;
- Support and cooperate in a mutually beneficial relationship with alumni, state dental organizations, and community leaders;
- Engage and actively support organized dentistry at the local, state, and national level;
- Encourage and support involvement in diverse student professional organizations;
- Provide and promote open communication within the School so that transparency yields improved opportunities for the School’s success; and
- Understand the rich traditions and history of the school of dentistry within the State of Alabama, University of Alabama System and the Greater Birmingham area.
Qualifications and Characteristics
Candidates must hold a D.M.D. / D.D.S. degree or other equivalent dental degree and have scholarly distinction appropriate for a tenured professor appointment in the school. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with a distinguished academic record in teaching, research, and service. Other qualifications that are desirable:
- A strong record of NIH and/or extramurally funded research and scholarship, with the stature and ability to cultivate and extend the School’s research agenda;
- A record of successful administrative leadership in higher education or equivalent experience in government or non‐profit organizations that demonstrates strong evidence of his/her capacity to manage the School of Dentistry at UAB;
- A demonstrated ability to be an institutional citizen and commitment to advancing the quality of education;
- An understanding of and vision for the future of dental education and the profession;
- A foundation in financial management with the ability to develop, implement, and grow the budget effectively;
- The ability to make sound judgements by aligning resources with strategic priorities;
- A proven track record and support of clinical excellence and a strong commitment to patient care;
- An understanding and clear commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion at all levels to foster an inclusive and equitable working and learning environment;
- Experience in leading and organizing School‐wide CODA and SACS accreditation activities;
- A proven capacity to lead in the development of effective programs of student recruitment, advising and student success activities to result in a competent and effective workforce;
- A proven capacity to aid in the recruitment, retention and development of faculty members with clinical, research, and service strengths to be effective leaders within the School of Dentistry and the dental community;
- A demonstrated commitment to interprofessional collaboration and the ability to collaboratively work with other academic units across campus;
- Strong financial acumen with experience in managing and stewarding resources, an ability to promote an entrepreneurial yet fiscally sound environment and to thrive within Responsibility Center Management;
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain a diverse faculty and staff at all levels;
- A record of proven, transformative, and entrepreneurial leadership with the ability to articulate a clear, compelling vision and to engage all constituencies in support of that vision;
- An ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, alumni, community stakeholders and partners to advance the School’s mission;
- Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate the vision, strengths and strategic plan effectively;
- The ability to develop and implement a strategic plan, establish metrics and assess progress, and align with the university strategic plan; and
- The ability to build a cohesive team within the School to develop a strong sense of community and pride for the School of Dentistry.
