Director of Advancement

Director of Advancement

Millbrook School, a coeducational, college preparatory boarding school for students in grades 9-12, seeks an experienced, thoughtful fundraiser with a proven track record to serve as its next director of advancement.

Reporting to Head of School Jonathan Downs ’98, the director of advancement will oversee all aspects of fundraising and lead the school’s efforts to secure annual, capital, and endowment support and strengthen its growing culture of philanthropy. With belief in the school’s mission and promise, the director of advancement will have the opportunity to help shape the strategic direction of Millbrook School and the Alumni & Development Office and facilitate a new era of fundraising and constituent relations. This will be accomplished through the creation and oversight of a comprehensive, goal-based, strategic development plan and the cultivation and stewardship of meaningful relationships within the community.

The director of advancement will increase Millbrook’s financial resources by planning, directing, implementing, and evaluating all fundraising programs, including the Annual Fund, major gifts, planned giving, trustee giving, and campaign efforts to support programs, facilities, and the endowment. Leading a fundraising team of eight professionals, the successful candidate will oversee the cultivation and solicitation of major and principal gifts and implement a plan for engaging all constituents. In addition, the director of advancement will actively manage a portfolio of donors, evaluate existing philanthropic strengths, and build systems that support long-term growth and fundraising goals. Ultimately, the director of advancement will ensure that single and multi-year development goals are strategically planned, thoughtfully implemented, accurately communicated, and successfully achieved in accordance with Millbrook’s vision.

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and thoughtful leader with experience implementing effective development strategies and initiatives. A skilled professional with a documented history of successful fundraising across a breadth of programs, the new director of advancement will have the ability to switch between high-level strategic visioning and the hands-on engagement that is reflective of Millbrook’s culture. Having a philanthropic vision and a commitment to supporting diverse constituencies, the new director of advancement will also strengthen existing relationships across campus with faculty, staff, parents, alumni, board members, and other stakeholders in support of development efforts.

Outstanding communication and collaboration skills and a healthy respect and enthusiasm for Millbrook’s mission and values are required. Experience with independent schools, especially boarding schools, is also preferred.

Incredible natural beauty defines Millbrook School’s campus, located 90 miles north of New York City in the lovely countryside of the Mid-Hudson Valley region. Millbrook School is committed to fostering a rich academic and co-curricular environment where every student thrives and has the tools necessary for a successful college experience. Specifically, its mission states, “In a community where every student is known and needed, Millbrook prepares its students for college and lives of meaning and consequence by instilling the values of respect, integrity, stewardship, service, and curiosity.”
