Cinema Media Specialist

The Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts (CINE) encourages applications for a Cinema Media Specialist! This role contributes to the overall operations of the Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts Department equipment rental and production facilities. This position will participate in the production of audio/visual materials and digital media, by operating cameras, audio recorders, film scanners, lighting equipment, and a variety of post-production software environments. They will also participate in the operation of specialty film scanners and transfer devices for archival, preservation and contemporary film and video for faculty, students, and internal and external clients. Operation decisions include: camera settings and placement, scanner settings, editing choices and audio material usage established by production standards. Additionally, this position supplies various levels of training and explanation to students, graduate students, faculty, and staff at the Cinema Studies equipment desk in the use of specific audio/visual equipment and the proper settings and approaches in reference to established production standards.

 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Operation and Production of Digital Media

  • Independently operates digital cameras and audio equipment to create training/instructional based digital media.
  • Operate digital cinema and audio recording equipment during in-class equipment training and demonstrations, during in-class shoots and productions, in the cinematography studio, and out in the live field environment.
  • Produce training materials for camera operation, exposure, camera placement, audio setup, recording levels, post-production workflows, media conversion and delivery.
  • Create digital media for use in training material to add in-depth material including menu settings for audio/visual equipment, ISO/exposure settings and when to use different types of exposures and settings in the operation of audio/visual equipment.
  • Contribute to the editing and post-production of in-class footage and outside recorded footage to provide instructional and example videos for students, faculty and staff.
  • Assist with editing and post-production including the use of digital based editing software, audio programs and media conversion software. Individually operate and assist in the operation of film scanners including the archival film scanner for the scanning of film-based material including 8mm, 16mm and 35mm which is provided by the client scanned and delivered based on client needs.
  • Provide personal judgment in scanner setting, number of scans needed to create desired outcome, editing digital scans and exporting settings for clients including faculty, staff, students, grad students, manager and any internal or outside groups.
  • Assist in the production of digital media materials documenting scanner settings, operations and differences of scanning 8mm, 16mm and 35mm film, output settings and finalizing the delivery of scanned material to be used in training and teaching materials used by Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts.
  • Record scanning procedures including but not limited to camera selection, camera setting, camera placement and recording of each action, operations and voice over. Contribute to the production needs of the cinematography studio as a scheduled lighting technician for the studio.
  • Provide operation on individual shoots with shooting space setup, lighting setups and configuration of lights within the shooting space for students, faculty and staff.

Training Users of Audio/Visual Equipment

  • Provide training of audio/visual digital cinema equipment in production-based courses and on a one-on-one basis at the equipment rental facility.
  • Provide training on higher end cameras, lights and lighting setups, audio setups and protocols, gimbal and glidecam systems and setups.
  • Provide students, faculty and staff with material that covers camera settings, exposure settings and audio settings, as well as material to work with during post-production tests and workflow determination.

Daily Operations and Staff Supervision

  • Supervise the daily operation of the equipment rental desk in the check-in and check-out of audio and video equipment, as well as supervision of temporary staff and student employees.
  • Train temporary staff and student employees to ensure they are fully capable of meeting faculty, student and staff needs. Schedule staff to maintain coverage during hours of operation.
  • Meet with faculty to understand their media needs for any given course and finds solutions to best meet their needs.
  • Prepare and coordinates all equipment, reservations, scheduling of equipment training, course gear request and needs for faculty, students and staff.
  • Provide proactive maintenance ensuring all equipment is functioning property. Completes reconciliation of daily cash and credit receipts with itemized computer printout of daily activities.
  • Fill out daily balance sheets including credit card and cash transactions and sales tax logs. Assist with budget oversight for select speedtypes.

Assist Kage Manager

  • Collaborate with the manager in the creation and execution of policies that impact the operation of the CINE rental desk, check-in and out of equipment, procurement of equipment, training procedures, equipment reservations, graduate-level equipment requests and faculty and staff interactions.
  • Responsible for cash and credit transactions, daily deposits, daily check out, and reservation fulfillment at the CINE equipment rental and production facility.
  • Support the operation of the Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts cinematography studio. Collaborate on the use and future needs of the studio, including, repairs, costs, improvements as well as CINE course needs for the shooting space.
  • Assist manager with inventory needs for the rental desk as well as the state of current equipment and any repairs that may be needed to current gear.
  • Assists manager with the production of documentation of certain film preservation and archival practices for use in training and for faculty and student reference.
  • Assist in running demonstrations that Manager offers on high-end equipment, special use equipment, and lab practices for media preservation courses or per graduate student training requests.

What You Should Know

  • This position is fully in-person, Monday - Friday.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $50,000 to $55,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment.
  • 1 year of related experience.
