JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Admissions - Outreach, the Assistant Director, African, Black, Caribbean (ABC) Student Recruitment is responsible for identifying, implementing, evaluating and reporting on the University's ABC outreach and diversity plans. The incumbent will focus on undergraduate students who identify with the African/Black/Caribbean (ABC) diaspora. The incumbent interacts with UCSC campus constituents (alumni, advisers, current students, student leaders, faculty, staff, etc.), school administrators, students and families, community organizations and other educational partners to help establish programs that will help increase the number of enrolled ABC undergraduates (both first-year students and junior-level transfer students from California community colleges), and other diverse populations. The incumbent will work with prospective students with varying intersectional identities within the ABC diaspora, as well as other prospective students identifying as American Indian/Native American, as part of a low socioeconomic demographic, undocumented/California Dreamers, and all genders and sexualities. The incumbent will supervise one Transfer Admissions Representative, who will focus on under-represented transfer-level students.

This position is responsible for maintaining inter-institutional relationships, providing information about campus and UC system-wide programs, including UC admissions policies and processes, and other unique attributes about the UCSC campus to audiences throughout California and across the US, as needed. This involves working directly with personnel at schools, primarily guidance/community college counselors, school principals, and transfer center directors. The incumbent will also work with community and faith-based organizations, interested prospective students and their families. The incumbent will participate annually in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach, recruitment, and yield strategies for students within, but not limited to California. Plans, coordinates and implements outreach and yield activities, including California and out of state admitted student receptions. Represents the UC system and assists campus colleagues with other outreach efforts, including staffing UC, state and national fairs and conferences.

The incumbent applies a wide variety of policies and procedures to determine if applicants have met selection criteria for admission to UC Santa Cruz and if they have achieved eligibility to the University of California. They will evaluate and make admission decisions for complex transfer applications.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $82,300 - $86,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

25% - Program Management
  • Plans, manages, and implements events as a part of larger diversity recruitment and yield strategy, primarily within California. Recommends improvements and modifications to existing programs. Provides training, guidance, and assistance to Admissions staff who participate in diversity recruitment and outreach. Works with the Admissions leadership team to ensure resources are allocated appropriately to meet departmental principles, goals, and deadlines.

20% - Outreach
  • Serves as a primary liaison for first year and transfer students from ABC and other diverse backgrounds at various venues. Plans visits, makes presentations, provides group and individual advising. Provides in-depth information to prospective first year and transfer students on admissions requirements, prerequisite major courses, programs, and curricula, financial aid criteria in school and community-based organization settings.

20% - Supervision
  • Participates in the hiring, training, and general guidance of direct supervises. Monitors their staff's performance and provides direction and assistance as needed. Works with staff to encourage professional development and foster development of relevant skills.

15% - Program Management
  • Collects, reviews and analyzes, prepares reports on the results of UCSC's diversity recruitment initiatives using data from various sources. Assists with the review and analysis of transfer data to ensure integrity and makes recommendations for recruitment and yield strategies of diverse populations.

15% - Evaluation
  • Uses extensive knowledge of department requirements and applicant pool, to assess the applicants' overall record and experience for final admissions recommendations. Researches various educational systems as needed and analyzes academic records from foreign secondary and tertiary institutions including study abroad records. This includes performing course-by-course evaluations for transfer credits.

5% - Compliance
  • Completes necessary paperwork to adhere to UC, UCSC, and Office of Admissions policies and procedures. This includes pre and post-travel planning and documentation and providing other compliance documentation as needed.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge of program management including program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Advanced experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals, schools, and community-based organizations.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including providing and receiving clear, concise information, and effectively communicating complex, technical information in professional settings with co-workers, prospective students, their families and the general public.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the communication of complex, technical information in professional settings with co-workers; prospective students, their families and the general public.
  • Proven experience in recruitment of historically under-represented students planning and implementation.
  • Advanced skills to develop the university's strategic recruitment plans, designing outreach and recruitment programs, and materials that will attract and enroll top candidates to the school/college, including from underrepresented groups.
  • Ability to analyze data, including return on investment, to assess the efficacy of outreach and recruitment program and use that information to formulate and present recommendations.
  • Knowledge and experience using standard computing tools including Microsoft Office applications, on-line databases, email, and web-based research tools.
  • Experience in education counseling or program promotion.
  • Experience working with admissions requirements for campus and departments, including mitigating circumstances / bases for exceptions.
  • Supervisory experience, including the ability to address diverse problems and motivate diverse staff.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in related area.
  • Advanced and comprehensive knowledge of UC admissions practices and procedures, including undergraduate evaluations and transfer credit policies, academic programs, including curricula, and financial aid programs, at colleges/universities and specifically at UC. Ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective students and the public.
  • Advanced knowledge of tertiary level foreign credentials, secondary school records, study abroad programs and policies and knowledge of major educational systems of the world.
  • Knowledge of language(s) other than English.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle/PeopleSoft Campus Solutions system and CRM Systems, as well as other student-based computing environments.
  • Experience with the online UC A-G Course List and ASSIST transfer student information resource.
