Job Description

The Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation (GPR) at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice in Environmental Planning, with a start date of August 2023. GPR is seeking an individual with expertise at the interface between people and the built and natural environments who is excited by the prospect of joining a multidisciplinary faculty and contributing to local and regional sustainable planning activities. Individuals with topical expertise and applied experience in planning for climate change, environmental justice, natural hazards, and land use change are particularly encouraged to apply.

This Environmental Planning position is non-tenure eligible. The successful applicant is expected to teach four courses per semester in our undergraduate and graduate degree programs using various modalities. The anticipation is for this position to be a continuous appointment, with opportunities for promotion and professional advancement contingent on successful performance, available budget, and department needs. Potential courses of instruction include Introduction to City Planning, Planning for Sustainable Communities, and other courses in the Urban Planning and Community Design minor and Community Planning graduate certificate programs. Successful applicants will also have an opportunity to design future courses related to their area of expertise in addition to playing an immediate leadership role in enhancing GPR's commitment to urban, sustainability, and justice focused curriculum. We are especially interested in candidates who can complement university and departmental initiatives to advance diverse perspectives, equity, and inclusion through meaningful engagement with students, faculty, and external stakeholders on environmental and social issues critical to a just and sustainable society. Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field.
  • Evidence of teaching urban/environmental planning at the college or university level.
  • Evidence of urban/environmental planning practice or engagement with planning profession.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Urban Planning or related field.
  • Experience in climate change, environmental justice, natural hazards, and/or land use planning.
  • Experience with environmental planning curriculum design and assessment.
  • Experience teaching across a variety of modalities (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid).
  • Commitment to mentoring students and/or professionals in the urban/environmental planning field.
  • Experience with applying social science theory to understand urban, social, and/or environmental problems.
  • Evidence of commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive teaching and work environment that respects diverse perspectives.


General Information

The Department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation (GPR) offers its students multiple undergraduate and graduate degrees, including a Geography, Environment, and Society Bachelors of Science (BS) degree as well as undergraduate minors in Urban Planning and Community Design, Critical Sustainable Studies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Regional Geography, and Physical Geography. Our geography program also offers a Master of Science (MS) in Geography, graduate certificates in Community Planning and GIS, and an accelerated GIS with Remote Sensing online MS degree.

GPR, and Northern Arizona University (NAU) more broadly, has a strong commitment to sustainability and justice. President Cruz-Rivera recently announced a campuswide climate emergency and commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030. NAU also continues to maintain strong ties with the City of Flagstaff regarding sustainability and climate action. NAU has been designated by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities as an Hispanic-Serving Institution and is recognized as a university with a specific commitment to Indigenous Peoples. Our department, college, and the university have a strong commitment to career track faculty. In Summer 2022, NAU implemented an overhauled and more formalized teaching professor and professor of practice tracks, with three promotion stages (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) for teaching-focused faculty. Career track faculty currently hold department chair and assistant/associate dean positions in our College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, while also serving as department representatives on NAU Faculty Senate.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page . Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service . Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
