Iowa State University, one of the nation's leading land-grant universities, invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS).

Position Overview
This position is responsible for providing overall leadership and program direction for the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) - an organization with an annual budget of $9 million and over 40 staff members. This includes developing a vision and strategic direction for CIRAS, in support of a) the elements of ISU's land grant mission associated with Iowa economic development, b) Iowa-focused corporate engagement, and c) the College of Engineering's Iowa outreach activities.

The Director leads a variety of federal- and state-funded business and economic development programs for the state of Iowa and Iowa State University (ISU), which are in the areas of manufacturing, government contracting, technology, and economic development. The Director acts as a key leader in Iowa, understanding the role of industry sectors on the economy, serving as a voice for small businesses, and providing linkages between the resources of ISU and CIRAS partners and a variety of businesses, agencies, and professional organizations.

The Director manages a complex and sometimes conflicting set of business assistance and economic development objectives for multiple federal, state, partner, and university stakeholders. This includes delivering services in leadership, growth, productivity, technology, and workforce to Iowa businesses; managing a complex network of partnerships and resources; providing strategic and operational direction to staff; and managing relationships with university, state, and national leaders. This includes university, college, department, and center administration; federal and state agencies' leadership and staff; political appointees, the federal delegation, and state legislators; and professional association leadership, industry association leadership, community leadership, community college leadership, and Board of Regents institutions.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and 8 years of related experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in management, leadership, team-building, partnering, strategy development, project management and process improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience of high-performance in the manufacturing sector.
  • Diversity of experience to fully and rapidly engage across the wide spectrum of CIRAS activities. Categories of experience include technology platforms, education/public speaking, applied research, corporate hiring, employment/interaction with both large and small companies, academia, youth outreach, contracts with Federal agencies, etc.
  • Experience analyzing and drawing conclusions from complex data sets, related to finance, economics, impact measurement, etc.
  • Experience developing and administering complex organizational budgets, including providing executive-level reporting. Demonstrated planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience creating and implementing organizational policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with regional and national media officials, community leaders, business and industry leaders, officials of government agencies, legislators and funders at the local, state, and national level and other important constituents. Experience exchanging and disseminating highly complex and important information.
  • Experience finding funding opportunities and writing proposals for grants and contracts.
