The Department of Mathematics at Oregon State University in beautiful Corvallis Oregon invites applications for a Department Head, with an accompanying appointment as tenured Professor. The incumbent will hold two appointments, a 0.75 FTE professional faculty position and a 0.25 FTE tenured Professor position, reflecting job duties in both the administrative and academic arenas during the academic year.
In addition, the leadership responsibilities of the Department Head position continue during the summer months and these are accounted for through a separate summer appointment. The Head reports to the Dean of the College of Science. The Head is an integral part of the College Leadership Team (CLT) working closely with the Dean to advance the mission of the College, develop strategy and participate in decisions impacting the finances and budget of the department.
The Department of Mathematics is one of seven units in the College of Science at Oregon State University. Mathematics is a research-active department committed to providing equitable access to quality learning and career development at all levels, devoted to creating and promoting knowledge in mathematics and preparing all students with mathematical literacy to succeed in today's world. The department has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 28 Instructors. The department is engaged in interdisciplinary and fundamental research in theoretical and applied mathematics. Current research areas include actuarial science and financial mathematics, algebra and number theory, analysis, computational and applied mathematics, geometry, mathematics education, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, probability, topology, and mathematical biology.
The department enrolls approximately 253 majors and offers a BS degree in mathematics with four different options in applied and computational mathematics, mathematical biology, statistics and secondary teaching emphasis. The department offers a minor in mathematics and in actuarial science. The graduate program leads to the MA, MS, and PhD degrees in mathematics and includes approximately 58 graduate students. The mathematics department offers a variety of lower division undergraduate courses through our Ecampus, ranging from elementary algebra to probability and vector calculus.
The Department Head is responsible for the management and leadership of the department's teaching, research, and outreach and service functions. The Head is expected to provide effective academic leadership, strategic vision and to remain active in teaching and research. The Department Head will integrate, advocate and advance equity & inclusive excellence within all aspects of their work in the College of Science. They will continuously refine the department's mission, vision and values to align with the College of Science and Oregon State University.
The Head will collaborate with the mathematics faculty and staff in leading the development and implementation of the strategic and diversity plans of the department and in connecting strategy to resources and budget to maintain and improve the fiscal health of the department. The Head will provide leadership for faculty in the development of policies and programs to improve student recruitment & success and address opportunity gaps for Pell-eligible, First Generation students, Students of Color, students from low income backgrounds and students from other underrepresented communities in STEM. Specific duties are to oversee budgetary, hiring and salary decisions, communicate vision and mission of the department to the college and university, set policy for the department, authorize proposal submissions for department mission, oversee completion of regular reporting required by the college and university, enhance diversity, foster collaborations across departments and colleges; engage community stakeholders as appropriate (e.g. engaging with alumni), and help with fundraising for the department, college and university.

The College of Science has seven departments across the mathematical, physical and biological sciences: Biochemistry and Biophysics, Chemistry, Integrative Biology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Statistics.
