Job Summary
The position's duties may be split between Teaching Laboratory Manager (0.80 FTE) in the School of Architecture and Community Design (SACD) and teaching undergraduate / graduate courses (0.20 FTE) in the SACD.  The school director can alter the FTE split based on unit needs. The position includes administrative duties as described below and included purchasing card authority.

Nature of Work
The USF School of Architecture & Community Design is a robust, design studio centric, NAAB accredited architecture program.  The teaching lab, in its various incarnations, has long supported the production of student projects and, after a brief covid pause, we find the facilities and equipment are in full demand. In short, the teaching lab/wood shop is integral to the studio experience at the SACD. The cohort consists of 175+/- graduate students and 80+/- undergrade students.  We have over 25 full time, visiting and adjunct faculty in a given semester.

The Teaching Lab Manager provides consultation and support to the School of Architecture & Community Design with multiple labs and equipment types. The position determines needs and orders and maintains appropriate lab equipment and supplies.  The position consults with regulatory offices and enforces health and safety standards in scientific or teaching labs. Equipment is both analogue and digital: (traditional wood shop equipment: table saw, drill press, radial arm saw, band saw, chop saw, hand power/mechanical tools and digital equipment such as laser cutters, cnc routers, 3d printers, etc.).  Digital equipment will require interface with IT Lab Manager.  Instruction in the safe and appropriate use of all equipment to all students accessing the shop is imperative.

Teaching assignments are determined in consultation with the school director and will be related to the faculty’s area of expertise and/or research interests.  Assignments may be at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. These could be focused workshops, seminars, or design studios. The option of summer teaching will be made available at an adjunct faculty salary rate.

Examples of Duties

  • Consults with faculty on demonstration needs and initiates setups.  Instructs students on proper and safe operation of equipment.
  • Evaluates teaching lab needs, in consultation with faculty and director, for major new equipment and instruments and prepares bids and requisitions to obtain them.
  • Oversees equipment and supplies budget in consultation with school director and office manager.
  • Evaluates need for supplies, develops and inventory system, and orders laboratory and teaching supplies.
  • Ensures that laboratory spaces comply with appropriate health and safety regulations. 
  • Acts as liaisons with offices such as Environmental Health and Safety and Physical Plant to maintain a safe working and learning environment for teaching and research labs. 
  • Consults with faculty and school administration in scheduling of safety workshops (primarily early in each term).
  • Coordinates overall schedule of laboratory use.
  • Supervises and schedules support staff (graduate teaching assistants).
  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated and in safe operating condition.
  • Advises students on proper techniques and/or on the aesthetics and construction of projects.
  • Assists and coordinates the start of semester building clean-up and studio preparation for new semester; and end of semester studio clean-out in preparation for Fall and Spring Open House Exhibitions with administration, office manager, and GTAs.

Minimum Qualifications Requirements
This position requires a Master's degree in a field related to the discipline of the work, and one year of related experience. Work experience related to the discipline of the work may be substituted for the degree. If applicable a personal portfolio of works and a portfolio of students work produced under the candidates’ direction should be submitted.
