Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with any changes in District policy and/or the faculty collective bargaining agreement.

•   Coach and instruct concepts in basketball at the individual and team levels; using well-designed in-season and out-of-season preparation models; demonstrating an emphasis on student-athlete academic success as part of a holistic approach to their college experience; and to a diverse student population from a wide range of schools, geographies, and personal and ethnic backgrounds.

•   Teach courses and concepts in a wide array of topics in Kinesiology to a diverse student population.

•   Plan and maintain athletic schedules and activities as required.

•   Knowledge and the application of the eligibility and recruitment requirements specified in the Constitution and Bylaws of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and Orange Empire Conference (OEC).

•   Develop and implement a student-athlete recruiting plan including contacts with local and regional high schools, clubs, and coaches.

•   Monitor course enrollment and progress toward the student athletes' educational objectives; monitor academic progress in-season, in the Non-Traditional Segment (NTS) and summer, ensure retention and persistence rates of students. 

•   Implement and grow a process for the placement of student-athletes at the 4-year level, including a network of college coaches nationally.

•   Manage annual budgets on equipment, supplies, travel, and personnel, ensuring that college funds are accurately accounted for and handled in accordance with college procedures and the highest ethical standards.

•   Assist with hiring, nurturing, and sustaining a knowledgeable staff of paid and volunteer assistant coaches.

•   Coordinate the logistical management of practices, contests, travel, and all team activities.

•   Manage the scouting of opposing teams and lead the review of game and practice film of IVC student-athletes and opponents.

•   Manage the coordination and preparation of video and recruitment materials in the placement of transferring student-athletes.

•   Adhere to all Athletics compliance requirements and uphold decorum policies of the OEC, CCCAA, and Irvine Valley College.

•   Assist in coordinating and preparing video and recruitment materials for the recruitment of student-athletes.

•   Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions in support of student success.

•   Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience with relevant pedagogical techniques to engage diverse student populations such as African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and other disproportionately impacted students.

•   Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college, and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities. 

•   Engage in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

•   Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

•   Maintain formal office hours; stay current on information as discussed in department and division meetings.

•   Provide an average of one (1) hour per week of college service that supports the division, college and/or District goals through active participation in one or more of the following categories: committee work on the department, division/school, college, and/or district level; non-classroom college, district, or community activities; department/division/school activities, events, or meetings; student club advisor activities or events.

•   Remain current in your discipline, of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to assist and support student success.

•   Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including comply with the applicable Course Outline of Record(s) (COR); respond to and evaluate student work regularly and consistently, inform students on a timely basis of their progress in the course throughout the term; and respond to student academic concerns, as appropriate, in a timely manner. Comply with district, college, and division policies in the performance of duties.

•   Work cooperatively with staff and students.

•   Regular and consistent performance of the requirements of your position.



Minimum Qualifications:

•   Master’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education; OR 

•   Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy; OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:

•   Experience and expertise in managing a culturally responsive basketball program, especially as it relates to the student-athlete experience; demonstrated ability to recruit a culturally diverse student population from widely divergent geographic and socio-economic communities; recent experience in leading students in the transfer and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) eligibility process, especially diverse student populations such as African Americans, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other marginalized groups, and other student groups such as first-generation, disabled, veterans, and non-traditional students.

•   Expertise in the unique policies and methodologies of the California community college athletic experience, especially in juxtaposition of those of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC).

•   Experience working with campus contacts and resources, especially in the areas of Counseling, Financial Aid, Admissions and Enrollment Services, International Students, Business Services and Maintenance and Operations.

•   College instructional experience in multiple disciplines among Kinesiology, Health & Nutrition, Public Health, and Athletics.

•   Experience in college curriculum development, including content, textbook selection, academic rigor, transfer standards and the GE pattern, Student Learning Outcomes (SLO), and Zero Textbook Costs (ZTC) and/or textbook selection.

•   Experience in Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) – their creation, measurement, assessment, and recording.

Full-time faculty are paid on the Academic Salary Schedule (see Wages for salary placement criteria in the Academic Employee Master Agreement located under Contracts on the District website). The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits which includes medical and dental insurance, vision-care plan, life insurance and dependent life coverage, accidental death and dismemberment coverage, long-term disability plan, and legal plan. All premiums are fully paid by the District.
