Chair Architecture

SCAD Savannah seeks a Chair of Architecture to direct, coordinate and evaluate an unparalleled program that pushes the boundaries of design education.

In this role, you will oversee daily operations and foster interdepartmental collaboration as you continue to enhance the reputation of the SCAD architecture department in academic and professional circles. Working with the dean and department members, you will provide professional development opportunities to faculty and design a strategic plan consistent with the School of Building Arts’ goals and the overall SCAD strategic plan. You will also plan curriculum and faculty teaching schedules; oversee departmental budget, including its development and implementation; work with the admission department to recruit undergraduate and graduate students to SCAD and to the department; evaluate professors; and teach classes annually as assigned.

They have proven leadership and managerial skills as well as outstanding interpersonal, communication and problem-solving capabilities to motivate students and faculty of diverse backgrounds to think creatively and critically. Leadership and supervisory experience in academia is preferred.

Requirements:
• M.Arch. or its equivalent or a terminal degree in a related field
• Industry experience
• Professional licensure or certifications
• Experience with curriculum development

Minimum Qualifications:

- Credentials sufficient to command the respect of the department members, which normally includes a terminal degree in that field (Ph.D. or Master’s degree (MFA preferred) in relevant field). Leadership and supervisory experience in academic area.
- Demonstrated effectiveness as an academic leader, normally through service on academic groups or through special assignments.
- A successful career as a faculty member, including a reputation for high academic standards and innovation in curriculum and pedagogy.
- Experience with curriculum development and the utilization of assessment to improve student learning and academic programs.
- Ability to conduct thorough, thoughtful, and fair faculty evaluations, including class observations, productive individual evaluation meetings, and clearly stated written evaluations that reinforce the faculty member’s strength and outlines areas of needed improvement with suggested strategies and support for that improvement.
- The knowledge to define the needs of the department on new faculty hires and the personnel judgment to make appropriate recommendations to the Dean for hiring and reappointment.
- The judgment to make good and fair decisions in the student’s best academic interests with regard to various waivers and expectations and the ability to capture those decisions in an annual accountability report.
- Willingness to collaborate with admissions on the recruitment and review of students, with career planning and placement on placing students and on building links to careers related to the discipline, and with other academic and non-academic departments in the best interests of students and the college.
- Attention to detail and to deadlines in such matters as course scheduling, classroom scheduling, budgetary development and oversight, and preparation of required reports.
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Innovative, energetic, and of the highest personal and professional integrity.
