Assistant Professor - Immunobioengineering

The Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering in the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream appointment in the areas of immunobioengineering and immunology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The expected start date is July 1, 2019.

The ideal candidate will have an emerging reputation with internationally recognized scholarship and demonstrated excellence in research in immunobioengineering and immunology related to stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, or cell and organ transplantation. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in the area of biomedical engineering, immunology or another relevant field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a record of excellence in research, a clearly demonstrated trajectory towards world-class scholarship, excellence in teaching, and experience teaching undergraduate courses in any of the fields noted above.

Excellence in research will be demonstrated by the quality of articles submitted in the application; output and impact of research or a research pipeline that is at high international levels; publications in top ranked, internationally recognized, and field relevant academic journals; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; and strong endorsements by referees of high international stature. The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and lead an innovative, independent, and externally funded, research program of the highest international calibre. Novel approaches to engineer immune responses for regenerative medicine applications are of particular interest. Evidence for excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments and accolades, strong letters of reference, a reflective teaching statement, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is strongly desirable.

Candidates will be closely associated with the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) Medicine by Design Program, and considered for appointment in appropriate partner departments at UofT, which may include Immunology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Cell and Systems Biology, and others within the Faculties of Applied Science and Engineering, Medicine, Arts and Science, and the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network.

The Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering (IBBME) at the University of Toronto is a multidisciplinary research community where engineering, medicine and dentistry investigators collaborate to develop innovative solutions that address global challenges in human health. More information is available at http://www.ibbme.utoronto.ca.

Medicine by Design (http://www.mbd.utoronto.ca) is a newly established program that harnesses the exceptional expertise at the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals at the convergence of physical and life sciences, engineering, mathematics and medicine to undertake transformative research in regenerative medicine and cell therapy. Medicine by Design is made possible thanks in part to a $114-million grant from the CFREF. Engineering the immune system to enable cell, tissue and organ transplantation, to enhance regeneration and repair, and/or novel ways of generating and manipulating stem cell derived immune cells, are amongst the priority areas of Medicine by Design.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Applications will be considered until the position is filled. Applications will begin to be considered starting on July 5, 2018.
