POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. In 2019, LaGuardia served over 30,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs. Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts. Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 56 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States. More than half are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, and 31 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, making the college a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia students receive financial aid. Slightly less than half attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in a 2017 Stanford University study. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs is responsible for the planning, leadership, and management of out-of-the-classroom support services and activities that foster students' academic success as well as their personal well-being and professional growth. An exceptional student advocate, the assistant dean oversees the delivery of academic and non-academic support services and ensures that students have meaningful and rewarding experiences that enrich their LaGuardia educations. A strategic thinker and problem solver, the assistant dean sees beyond short-term responses to students’ challenges and develops new solutions, striving with his/her/their colleagues to create the most welcoming and supportive campus environment possible for our students.

 

The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs is also responsible for the following:

  • Provide leadership and oversight of various departments/units in the Division of Student Affairs, including: Community Standards and Student Conduct; the Wellness Center; Ombudsman; the Office of Transfer Services, the Office of Accessibility Services, Veterans’ Services, and Campus Life departments and programs such as BMEC, CREAR Futuros, the Women’s Center, and the LGBTQIA Safe Zone Hub.
  • Build relationships and partnerships with faculty, staff, and administrators in other divisions and departments of the college to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive program of student support services in order to promote and enhance student engagement and college completion.
  • Provide leadership and support for campus-wide, signature events such as Orientation, First Week Welcome, Commencement, and others.
  • Provide oversight, coordination, and communication of student affairs policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Advise staff and faculty on appropriate actions in emergency situations in collaboration with College Public Safety.
  • Serve on college committees as assigned, and perform other duties as required.

 

This position is based in Queens, NY.

 

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At a minimum, the successful candidate will have:

  • A strong record of demonstrated leadership in student affairs
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and experience with, programs in support of student development.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to serving a multicultural student body and to building an inclusive campus environment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Collaborative leadership style and a record of building consensus and supporting productive participatory decision-making
  • Demonstrated skills in data analysis in support of program assessment and continuous improvement.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$120,524 - $145,000
