Northern Arizona University, Yuma Branch Campus is conducting a national search to fill a non-tenure track, academic year faculty position in Psychology at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor. This position is expected to be continuing with potential for promotion. Renewal is contingent on performance, continued funding and departmental needs.

The Yuma Branch Campus of Northern Arizona University in Yuma, AZ is located on the grounds of Arizona Western College, the local community college. The branch campus serves a vital and growing local and regional community. NAU-Yuma has a primary role in providing a wide range of bachelor and graduate degrees in the Lower Colorado River region of Arizona and California. The Yuma Branch Campus has approximately 500 students on campus, while offering distance programs to an additional 1500 students off campus. The Yuma Branch Campus has been designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

The administrative and curricular structure for the Psychology program is housed at the Yuma Branch Campus of Northern Arizona University. The program is offered to a very diverse student population primarily through face-to-face delivery. Several other social science related programs support the Psychology program. All faculty members are expected to promote student learning and help students achieve academic outcomes. NAU's emphasis on undergraduate education is enhanced by its graduate programs and research as well as distance learning. NAU-Yuma provides opportunities to work with faculty and students in established partnerships with Mexican universities in Sonora and Baja Norte, Mexico.

Arizona residency is required. Some travel for meetings, recruitment efforts, and other job related duties is an expectation of the position as well as community service activities.This position requires the ability to meet Arizona Administrative Fleet Safety Policy requirements as occasional travel within the State of Arizona is required.

Job Description

The primary focus of this position is teaching upper division psychology courses for the Bachelor of Science in Psychology program. A demonstrated connectedness to the discipline of psychology is expected. The program provides students with opportunities for focused study in psychology and prepares students for many educational and career paths. This faculty member will serve as a member of the Arts and Sciences Division on the Yuma Branch Campus and works closely with the Psychological Sciences Department at NAU Flagstaff. The faculty member is expected to serve as a student mentor in their local area. The position requires teaching, service, and professional development activities. Courses will include Research Methods, courses in the successful applicant's area of interest and courses that fit the departmental needs. Research is encouraged, particularly community-engaged scholarship. A successful annual review is dependent on a demonstrated connectedness to the discipline, positive teaching reviews and department service. The faculty member is expected to serve on university and campus committees and assist with program development. The successful candidate will serve as a resource to academic advisors and recruiters. Summer and winter teaching may be available for additional compensation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctoral degree in Psychology or closely related field from an accredited university
  • The equivalent of one year (2 semesters) of college-level teaching (at least 6 credit hours per semester) or other relevant professional experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Able to teach a range of upper division courses in Psychology, such as Sensation and Perception, Cognitive Psychology, Statistics, Motivation and Emotion, or Psychophysiology of Drugs
  • Background in cognitive or neuroscience areas
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse faculty, staff and student environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and working with first-generation minority students
  • Proficiency in elementary Spanish language
  • Experience teaching remote courses to augment face-to-face teaching
  • Demonstrated ongoing engagement with the discipline as evidenced by a research agenda, conference participation, or other involvement with the profession

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

$60,000 - $63,991

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page . Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service . Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
