The University of South Carolina seeks a visionary, strategic, and collaborative leader for Dean of the Graduate School who is committed to inclusive excellence. The University of South Carolina (USC) is the flagship institution of the University of South Carolina System. USC is a Carnegie Tier I Research Institution. More than 35,300 students enrolled at USC Columbia in fall 2021. It is one of 56 public universities in the US to earn both the top research classification and the community engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The Graduate School is central to USC's national reputation for academic excellence and plays a critical role within the university's research enterprise. With 250+ highly respected graduate degree and certificate programs and a vibrant community on and off-campus, there are over 6700 graduate studentsenrolled in the graduate school. The Dean of the Graduate School will lead a service-focused college committed to enhancing the experience of graduate students and the faculty and staff with whom they work. Appointed by the president and reporting to the provost, the Dean reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and is a member of the Council of Academic Deans.

The next Dean will be an experienced and collaborative leader, committed to expanding the impact of the Graduate School at the state and national levels. The position calls for a person with proven leadership and imagination who can help to build the research enterprise of the college and strengthen collaborative partnerships with the Provost and Academic Deans. The Dean will also enhance relationships with existing philanthropic donors and attract new funders for additional support of USC's graduate education programs. The Dean must also embrace the importance of working with the state legislature and educational leaders to advance the school's commitment to advancing the quality of public education in South Carolina.

Candidates must have an earned doctorate and a record of university teaching, scholarly and creative activity that merits appointment at the rank of tenured full professor in an academic program in the University. They should have outstanding records of leadership, scholarship, and management in complex institutions; experience effecting change; an entrepreneurial instinct; an inclination to be welcoming and inclusive; and a capacity to nurture local, regional, and national networks and relationships to enhance graduate student quality, private and corporate fundraising, and national stature of the USC Graduate School.
