Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost

Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost
Job ID: 18440
Location: City College of New York
Regular/Temporary: Regular

The President of the City College of New York invites applications/nominations for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, reporting directly to the President. The individual will serve as the College's Chief Academic Officer, with direct responsibility for the academic divisions and schools, for all curricular matters, for the management and promotion of research, for offices and programs supporting student success, for the management of the budget supporting these activities, and for the general health and welfare of the academic units.

The Provost's fundamental role will be to foster academic excellence and promote student achievement at one of the nation's most historic institutions. Founded in 1847 as the Free Academy, and dedicated ever since to promoting the idea that a prosperous and democratic society requires the educated talent of the whole people, CCNY has consistently led efforts to find and develop the talents of young men and women from every walk of life, representing every conceivable background. Today, we are the second most successful college in the United States at fostering social mobility among our students, and a place that embraces, as a core institutional value, the mission of identifying and seeking to eradicate disparities of any kind that impede more robust social mobility for our students and in our society generally.

The City College Provost will be a key member of the President's executive team, but will enjoy substantial latitude for shaping the academic profile of the college. Working within the nation's largest urban public university system, the CCNY provost will take a leadership role in the formation and execution of educational policy and practice in New York City.

We expect a successful candidate for this position to have a broad range of academic interests. CCNY is a campus with a robust college of liberal arts and sciences, as well as professional schools that include an engineering school, a school of architecture, a medical school and a school of education. Nevertheless, CCNY is distinct, in the CUNY system, for being a campus on which a particular concentration of STEM disciplines and advanced scientific research takes place, and so the search committee will be particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in science and engineering fields, and a deep understanding of how research operates in those fields.

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have the qualifications to make him or her eligible for a tenured, full professor positon at the City College of New York, and sufficient administrative or other appropriate experience. It will be important for a successful candidate to have excellent communication skills, a willingness to engage across the campus, a strong managerial sense and facility with budgets and budgeting processes.
