Farmingdale State College, a nationally ranked college on a trajectory of growth and improvement, seeks the next Dean to lead its School of Engineering Technology. The College, which has been meeting or exceeding measures for enrollment, program growth, and student success following graduation, is seeking a leader who can build and guide the strategic vision for the School’s continued success. The new Dean will join what many describe as the Farmingdale family, where students are the first priority and creative ideas come to fruition.

The Position: The School of Engineering Technology (SET), the flagship school of the College, includes Departments of Aviation, Automotive Technology, Architecture and Construction Management Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Security Systems and Law Enforcement Technology. The Institute for Research and Technology Transfer (IRTT), Renewable Energy and Sustainability Center (RESC), and Infrastructure and Transportation Security Center (ITSC) are also overseen by the Dean. The School of Engineering Technology houses the College’s first graduate program, which commenced in the fall of 2017. The Dean of the SET sets the vision and direction and provides leadership in curriculum development, faculty development, establishment of plans and standards for student recruitment and retention, and ensures that the standards for specialized accreditation are being met. Working with off-campus agencies and affiliations to advance the academic programs and mission for the School of Engineering Technology is essential. The Dean works collaboratively with the academic administration team under supervision of the Provost and acts as the official channel for communication regarding all matters among the school, the Provost, the President, and the other schools. The Dean directs all instructional programs and staff and provides direction and leadership in the initiation, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs within the school. The Dean also works with the Office of Development and Philanthropy to identify, cultivate, and solicit non-state, private resources for the school. The Dean supervises the recruitment and selection of all new faculty and staff according to established College procedures and allocates personnel to the various departments within the school. In consultation with the Provost, the Dean establishes and monitors all budget allocations to academic departments and offices within the school.

The Institution: Farmingdale State College, founded in 1912 and located in the heart of Long Island, is one of the fastest-growing colleges in the region and in the State University of New York system. A public college of applied science and technology with an enrollment of more than 9,600 undergraduate and graduate students and a rich history of over 90,000 graduates, Farmingdale is the largest college of technology in the SUNY system. Qualifications: The new Dean will be a passionate advocate for the ongoing mission of the School of Engineering Technology and an experienced administrator. S/he must hold an earned Ph.D. from a regionally accredited institution in one of the disciplines of the School of Engineering Technology or a related discipline, be eligible for tenure at the full professor level, and have the capacity to develop and lead a strategic vision for the School. Experience in a shared governance environment, demonstrated success working with a team to achieve institutional goals, as well as good interpersonal, management, and conflict resolution skills will be vital. Visa sponsorship will not be provided by the College for this position.

Location: Farmingdale State College is located on 380 lush acres in the center of Long Island, situated in the village of Farmingdale, NY, with local access to Republic Airport (a major general aviation reliever in the area) and a Long Island Railroad station just a few minutes away. Boasting over 700 miles of track, the LIRR takes its riders to all corners of the island, from the forks on the East end over to the boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan to the West. With its rich cultural milieu, Manhattan is a smorgasbord of arts, entertainment, nightlife, and restaurants that can't be found anywhere else. Long Island also has more than 200 miles of coastline, with dozens of beaches, boardwalks, and parks available to the public. Bethpage State Park, less than five miles from the College, provides easy access to outdoor recreation, including tennis courts, bridle paths, hiking and biking trails, and five world-class golf courses. Long Island has a vibrant and very active business community, with numerous software companies, specialized manufacturers, and major national and international corporate headquarters such as Henry Schein, Broadridge Financial Solutions, Systemax, Verint, and Canon all within reach. Scientific research plays a significant role in the economy of the island also, including research facilities at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, not to mention labs at several prestigious local colleges.
