Centenary University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Centenary University, located in Hackettstown, the heart of northwest New Jersey's historic Skylands Region, has a 155-year tradition of providing high-quality liberal arts and professional studies while helping students gain the skills and connections they need to prosper in today's world. Centenary is a private, co-educational, and close-knit university community - an environment where every professor and staff member is invested in student success.

The university enrolls 1,551 students, including 1,128 undergraduate students and 423 graduate students. Approximately 500 undergraduates live on-campus. Over 80 percent of students are from New Jersey and, of those students, over half come from the counties surrounding Centenary. Centenary's students pursue their academic interests in bachelor's, master's, and professional certificate programs. Centenary upholds a tradition of promoting service to others as a critical component of higher education - a core principle since its founding in 1867 by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Centenary is located about an hour from New York City and about an hour and a half from Philadelphia. The university is in the center of Hackettstown, New Jersey, a city located along the banks of the Musconetcong River and home to many thriving and noteworthy businesses, including Mars Chocolate North America. Hackettstown is in the Skylands Region of New Jersey, which is known for its lakes, rivers, and rolling hills, as well as 60,000 acres of state parkland.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) provides university-wide leadership to develop and implement academic programs that promote student success. The VPAA reports directly to the President, serves on the President's Cabinet, and represents the institution at local, state, and national meetings. As the Chief Academic Officer of the institution, the VPAA is responsible for articulating Centenary's academic vision and working collaboratively with deans, directors, department chairs, and faculty developing and implementing instructional programs, budgets, and academic policies. The VPAA serves as the chief executive officer of the university in the absence of the President.

All undergraduate and graduate programs report to the VPAA through five academic units: the School of Business, Media, & Writing (BMW); the School of Education & Humanities (EDHU); the Department of Equine Studies (EST); the School of Natural, Health, Social & Behavioral Sciences (NHSB); and the Department Fine Arts (THA). Five academic support units report to the VPAA: Academic Success & Advising; Academic Innovation & Instructional Design; Institutional Research and Assessment; the Office of the Registrar, and Taylor Memorial Library. The Centenary Stage Company reports to the VPAA through the Chair of Fine Arts.

The VPAA is expected to possess the following qualities/attributes:

• An earned doctorate from an accredited institution and eligibility for a faculty appointment with tenure

• A significant and progressive record of higher education leadership appropriate for service in this role.

• Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to lead multiple units and people to work together successfully.

• Demonstrated ability to lead within a system of shared governance.

• Demonstrated cultural competency, including successful experience working with diverse groups.

• Demonstrated ability to place the mission of the university as a whole above the mission of an individual unit within the university.

• Knowledge of current trends in higher education and significant experience with assessment, student learning outcomes, and pedagogy.

• A leadership style that fosters collaboration, respect, and teambuilding.

• Commitment to developing innovative academic programs adapted to the needs of 21st-century learners.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• A sense of humor.

• A high level of energy.
