FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-five campuses within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. Named for the slain civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education.

Medgar Evers College (MEC) received a $10.8 million grant from New York City to enable MEC to establish a new School that would expand offerings in health-related majors. The new School was approved by the CUNY Board of Trustees in the Spring of 2022, under the name, the School of Science and Allied Health. With MEC’s strong social justice mission, the newly established School of Science and Allied Health will be distinctive. Through the development of more high-demand healthcare degree programs, culturally inclusive occupational internships, and exceptionally strong mentoring, our bold commitment to healthcare equity will make this School of Science and Allied Health unique to CUNY, New York City, our various stakeholders, our medically underserved communities and health professional shortage areas, where our graduates will serve.

The Department of Physics and Computer Science (PCS) seeks applicants for two tenure-track faculty positions for Fall 2023 in theoretical or experimental Physics at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank. Our preference is for areas related to Earth and Space Science or Condensed Matter, but we will also consider exceptional candidates from other fields of physics. The candidates will be required to teach a wide range of undergraduate physics courses. Our preferred candidates will be committed to teaching and mentoring our students. Ideas to develop new courses that engage our students and prepare them to compete successfully are a plus as is experience teaching underrepresented students. The candidates are expected to develop active research programs that include undergraduate research and mentoring and to seek external funding. We would like our candidates to collaborate with computer science faculty so expertise in computer science, programming, modelling and numerical calculations is a plus. The candidate will also share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
