Coordinator of Multicultural Counseling

Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) seeks candidates for an exciting, new position of Coordinator of Multicultural Counseling. SCSU is a student-centered university providing exemplary undergraduate and graduate education to approximately 10,000 students. Founded as New Haven Normal School in 1893, Southern has evolved over the past century into a comprehensive public university committed to excellence, social justice, access, and engagement. One of four universities in the 17-member Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System, the University is located in New Haven, a culturally vibrant environment with easy access to New York City and Boston.

Reporting to the Director of Counseling Services, the Coordinator of Multicultural Counseling serves an essential role as a direct mental health service provider to all students with a special focus on underrepresented students.  The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the impact that inequality, prejudice and marginalization can have on students from underrepresented populations, including students of color, international students, and/or students who identify as LGBTQIA, and have the skills and experience in therapy, consultation and outreach to address/diminish this impact.  The Coordinator of Multicultural Counseling will engage in meaningful outreach activities with appropriate community partners and cultural student groups intended to promote increased access for services. The Coordinator will engage in ongoing assessment of the needs of traditionally underrepresented students and develop and evaluate the Counseling Center’s clinical services, outreach and training to meet those needs.

Additionally, this position requires strong, broad, generalist clinical skills to assess and intervene with a wide range of presenting student concerns within a time-limited treatment model. The Coordinator provides initial triage and intake assessments, group and individual counseling, crisis intervention, assessments regarding danger to self or others, referrals, outreach, psychoeducational workshops, and consultation.

The Coordinator of Multicultural Counseling is a full-time, 12-month position.
