About the Department

Student Housing and Conference Services (SHCS) exists to promote individual development, academic success and conscientious citizenship among our student residents. SHCS meets the needs of our diverse residents that include freshman, returning students, graduates and students with dependent children and/or spouses by focusing on student success and by providing facilities, services, resources and programs that foster respectful and responsible living among student residents in a safe, welcoming and learning focused residential environment.  SHCS has the capacity to serve approximately 3,540 residents on 47 acres of grounds that include 21 student residence halls, 11 apartment buildings for student families/guest residents, two community centers, a residential dinning commons and a student housing administration building. SHCS currently offers several Living Learning Communities (LLCs) and Themed Living Communities (TLCs) aimed to bring together student residents, faculty and staff with similar academic interests, personal passions and life experiences in an engaging residential environment designed to foster collaboration and connection. The Director, Student Housing and Conference Services provides leadership, vision, and management direction for Student Housing and Conference Services (SHCS).  Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Life, the incumbent serves as the chief housing officer of the University and oversees a comprehensive housing program designed to promote the University's learning and student success centered mission. As the chief administrator for the University's student housing program, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating extensive strategic planning, goal setting and assessment initiatives; implements best practices related to residential life programs and services; provides direction and oversight for budgeting, long-term financial forecasts, physical plant and facility operations, conferencing and administrative operations; ensures effective marketing and retention efforts to maximize occupancy; and directs emergency preparedness and crisis response efforts. The Director provides leadership that ensures programs and services are aligned with the department's goals of positively impacting retention and graduation rates among residential students; ensures that academic, social, recreational, cultural and safety programs and services that facilitate a living environment conducive to student success and directly oversees related assessment efforts. The incumbent anticipates future housing trends and how to best accommodate those trends programmatically as well as through the initiation of building and renovation programs.  In collaboration with the university's executive leadership, various campus departments, and the Chancellor's Office, the director oversees and contributes to the development of CSUN’s housing master plan. The director ensures the completion of annual renovations and upgrades to existing buildings and the planning and construction of new buildings, including the review of architectural and construction documents and follow up on contracts related to furniture, fixtures, technology and equipment.  The incumbent is a responsible for administering a $25 million annual budget with various reserve funds; directly supervises 6 professional employees and has overall supervision responsibility for approximately 87 staff and 160 student employees in five operating units – Residential Life, Facilities Operations, Administrative Services, Financial Services and Human Resources, and Residential Computing Resources.  The Director collaborates closely with other University stakeholders regarding academic, programmatic and student support services, including academic colleges/departments, the University Counseling Services, The University Corporation, Department of Police Services, Facilities Planning, Student Accounting and Cash Services, and University Budget Management. Performs other duties as assigned.


Equivalent to graduation from an accredited institution with a Master's degree in higher education administration, student personnel or related field. Equivalent to a minimum of six years of full-time, progressively responsible higher education supervisory/leadership experience within student housing operations and residential life is required, with a minimum of three years in a leadership/management role.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

Demonstrated leadership in developing and delivering learning-centered programs and services that promote student success among diverse populations in student housing. Demonstrated success in motivating and leading large and diverse staff, including represented and non-represented union employees. Demonstrated leadership with facilities maintenance, renovation, planning and design. Highly developed skills in budgeting and financial forecasting.  Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex crisis situations involving multiple stakeholders.  Highly developed and demonstrated understanding of student safety, emergency management and student behavior/conduct best practices. Highly developed strategic planning skill set. Highly developed ability to develop successful partnerships with multiple on and off-campus stakeholders in order to develop and achieve a cohesive student housing vision. Familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act and various regional, state, federal and system-wide regulatory codes. Strong understanding of student development theory, community development and impact of housing on student retention and graduation. Strong understanding of technology and how advances can be implemented to improve work systems and productivity. Exceptional communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills. Ability to maintain a high level of discretion, confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment in all decisions. Ability to identify operational strengths and challenges; initiate and implement plans, policies and procedures to solve problems and take advantage of strengths/opportunities. Proven ability to develop and sustain student communities that value and promote diversity.
