Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) seeks a committed, student-centered and collaborative leader to serve as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS).

CLASS includes the following units: African-American Studies; Art, Music, Theatre; Counseling and Social Work; Criminology and Criminal Justice; English and Modern Languages; History; Liberal and Integrative Studies; Sociology/Anthropology; and Women and Gender Studies. The College currently supports a full-time faculty of 50 and offers eight baccalaureate programs and two masters programs to 352 undergraduate and 98 graduate students.

UIS is one of three universities in the world-class University of Illinois System and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). Its talented faculty are leaders in their areas of study and teach all courses at UIS. Students take advantage of leadership opportunities not found at other universities. This allows them to shape their college experience and positions them ahead of peers outside UIS for career opportunities and further scholarship. The UIS campus is comprised of 746 acres in Springfield, IL, approximately 200 miles southwest of Chicago and 100 miles northeast of St. Louis.

The dean is the chief executive empowered to lead and shape the newly-organized College. Reporting to the vice chancellor for academic affairs & provost, the dean of CLASS will advocate for the value of education in the liberal arts and social sciences for the campus and Springfield area communities and partners. It is expected that the dean will work to build and foster relationships with university and community partners, demonstrate continued commitment to inclusive excellence and uphold the university's commitment to a humanistic education and its culture of student-centered learning.

The university seeks a dean who is easily engaged and is a strong advocate and spokesperson for the role that the liberal arts play in producing well-rounded students. Desired competencies include innovative and effective leadership and entrepreneurial skills; strong financial acumen; the ability to work collegially and cooperatively; a record of advancing diversity, equity and inclusion; and success in fundraising and developing external partnerships.

Candidates must possess an earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in a field related to the mission of CLASS and a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship and service necessary for a senior appointment in the College.
