VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH

VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH

A national search is underway as Temple University (“Temple”), Carnegie R1 research-intensive university and located in the historic and culturally rich city of Philadelphia, seeks a new leader to serve as the Vice President for Research (VPR) – to lead the research enterprise along its trajectory of excellence, one that is responsive to ever changing global challenges. The VPR will be a visionary, strategic, and inclusive leader, who is committed to the highest standards of academic and research excellence and integrity. The selected candidate must have a track record of discovery and innovation as well as the training of the next generation of scholars and innovators.

The Research Office will be critical in carrying out the priorities of Temple’s Strategic Plan, and achieving the University’s aspiration. The Research Office will play a lead role in supporting the evolution of new research, maintaining a competitive research infrastructure, developing research policies, and overseeing sponsored research activity.

In this highly visible role, the VPR will report to Provost Gregory N. Mandel. The selected candidate will have a significant opportunity to build upon the University’s momentum and lead institution-wide efforts to promote collaborative research programs and synergies that will continue to advance the University’s reputation as a premiere research institution. The VPR is responsible for providing central leadership to Temple’s research programs and representing the University's interests in research on its campuses and to external constituencies.

The VPR oversees all aspects of research across the University and will: explore new areas for the expansion of the research enterprise; oversee campus-wide planning efforts for research facilities; and develop innovative approaches to enhance research productivity of the University. The VPR will further unify the active coordination of multidisciplinary research programs and represent Temple to local, regional, and national constituencies as well as to federal and other funding agencies.  Further, they will leverage the geographical proximity to many pharmaceutical, biotech, finance, and engineering companies to build industry-partnerships.

The VPR must understand the complexities of research agendas in higher education, be sensitive to the perspectives and values of faculty, staff, and students across all disciplines, have a commitment to shared governance, and possess the ability to collaborate with the diverse stakeholders across the University and to navigate the landscape to connect with the Greater Philadelphia community and its surrounding ecosystems. Indeed, the successful candidate will be politically savvy to mobilize with external and internal stakeholders, including government representatives, donors, and affiliated organizations on behalf of the University.

Above all, the VPR will embody Temple’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice by embedding these efforts into the research infrastructure, leading a diverse and inclusive team, and growing research that focuses on various inequities. They must be emotionally intelligent, able to adapt to the institutional culture of Temple while able to articulate and implement culture change when necessary. The ideal candidate will possess an earned doctorate or requisite terminal degree from an accredited higher education institution and experience and accomplishments that warrant an appointment as a tenured full professor.

Confidential review of applications, nominations and expressions of interest will begin immediately and will continue until an appointment is made.  To ensure full consideration, please email a letter of interest and resume to Korn Ferry at: Temple-VPR@kornferry.com
