The University of Maryland seeks a visionary leader, creative innovator, accomplished journalist or scholar, and persuasive advocate for the media landscape to serve as the next Dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism (Merrill College).

The Merrill College's faculty of acclaimed researchers and repeat winners of journalism's top awards - including the Pulitzer, Peabody and Emmy awards - prepares students to join a dynamic profession. Students leave the college with strong writing and visual skills, a command of technology and nuanced understanding of data analysis and audience engagement. The college recruits diversity throughout its ranks, helping prepare students to search for and tell meaningful stories in all communities. The Merrill College is currently home to approximately 500 undergraduates, 60 master's and 30 doctoral students; 15 tenure/tenure-track faculty (including scholars and professionals), 24 professional-track faculty, 49 adjunct lecturers and 13 staff; operates via an $8 million budget; and recently raised $15.2 million as part of the university's Fearless Ideas campaign, exceeding its goal by over 50%.

Reporting directly to Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice, Maryland's next dean of the Merrill College will be committed to strong and visionary college leadership, eager to support its array of undergraduate, graduate and professional certificate programs, signature centers and organizations, expertise areas and academic culture. The dean will work with faculty, staff and students to articulate a vision for the contributions the Merrill College will make to the fulfillment of Maryland's mission and new strategic plan. The dean will be committed to building a community whose members advance diversity and inclusive excellence in teaching and learning. Further, they will promote a culture of impactful research, scholarship and creative activity, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships, and advocate persuasively for the Merrill College's programs both within and beyond the campus community. The dean will manage resources thoughtfully and will work with campus partners, the Board of Visitors, alumni, donors and foundations to increase philanthropic support for the Merrill College's faculty, programs and students. As the leader of the Merrill College, the dean will serve on the university's academic leadership team, collaborate on university-wide initiatives and engage with diverse stakeholder groups to build support for the future of journalism.

Candidates must have an advanced degree (terminal degree preferred) or a minimum of 10 years of professional journalism experience. The successful dean candidate will have a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments and leadership, and will merit a tenured appointment at Maryland with the rank of professor. In reviewing candidates for tenure, the Philip Merrill College of Journalism and the University look for the establishment of an active research and/or journalistic program based on a clear programmatic focus with evidence of significant impact on the field. The next dean will have a national or international reputation as an expert practitioner or scholar within the field, coupled with substantive administrative or managerial experience. Key to this appointment will be a record of advancing institutional equity, diversity and inclusion in all its forms. The successful candidate will also have experience with alumni and donor relations or have clear potential for strength in those areas along with an understanding of the distinctive character and mission of a public university. Finally, the dean will have a record of fruitful, collaborative, creative efforts to build consensus.
