Dean, College of Nursing

Seattle University | Dean, College of Nursing
Seattle, WA

Seattle University (SU), a nationally ranked, independent, Jesuit-Catholic institution located in one of the world's most vibrant and innovative cities, seeks an innovative and inspirational leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Nursing (CON). Candidates must bring a deep commitment to the ideals of service and social justice and exceptional undergraduate and graduate education in nursing and health care professions.

Seattle University CON was founded by the Sisters of Providence as the Providence School of Nursing in 1877. In 1935, it was transferred to SU as the School of Nursing and officially became the SU College of Nursing in 2003. The College has a long and distinguished history of preparing values-based and compassionate nursing professionals and leaders who embody the College's mission and serve the health care needs of the community and region. The College is home to 120 full and part-time faculty and over 850 students who graduate from one of the CON's programs: Doctor of Nursing Practice, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion-BSN, and Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound.

The next Dean will have the opportunity to join a dynamic and forward-looking leadership team at Seattle University led by President Eduardo Peñalver, who joined the University in 2021. As a member of a highly engaged and collaborative group of deans, many of whom are new to Seattle University, the Dean of the CON will shape the future strategic direction of the College by capitalizing on its strengths and identifying new areas of growth and innovation. Reporting directly to Provost Shane Martin, the Dean leads all the administrative, academic, and resource matters for the CON. In addition, the Dean carries out an important external role, within the University and in the broader community, as an advocate and ambassador for Seattle University and the CON and as a spokesperson and thought leader for issues related to the future of nursing, community health and wellness, health policy and the health professions.

The incoming Dean of the CON at Seattle University must be an excellent communicator and a visionary leader who thrives in a collaborative, high-energy, and dynamic campus culture. They must possess the ability to be nimble and creative in developing the CON's identity as a mission-driven, patient-oriented organization dedicated to providing excellent programming in nursing and healthcare education with a direct impact on communities in Seattle and the region. They must also be future-oriented and data-informed, analyzing trends in the healthcare industry and remaining attuned to the needs and demands of an ever-changing healthcare environment.

Candidates for Dean of the CON must be a Registered Nurse and meet, or be able to meet, the qualifications for licensure in Washington. Additionally, they should bring a demonstrated record of progressive leadership and experience in nursing administration, education, and practice at the Department/Division Chair, Director, Dean, or equivalent leadership level. Candidates with progressive careers in leadership from practice settings such as CNOs, Executive Directors of Community Care Settings, and others who meet the academic degree requirements (PhD, DNP, and research qualifications) will also be considered. Addressing the opportunities and challenges facing the CON will require a dean with broad intellectual interests, a respect for Jesuit values, strong fundraising skills, creativity and entrepreneurial instincts, an open-minded and engaging approach, a university-wide perspective, and the ability to form collaborative partnerships within and beyond the University.
