Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness

Norfolk State University invites applications for the Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness (VPAE).  The Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for promoting and nurturing the wide-ranging goals of Academic Affairs and the broader educational goals of Norfolk State University.  The Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness must be committed to the mission and vision of the University, have a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, and a record of integrity and ethical leadership.  Although this position does not include a faculty appointment, the Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness works closely with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and external constituents to improve student retention, and graduation rates and promote student academic success. 

 

The Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness serves as academic effectiveness liaison primarily responsible for assisting the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs with matters pertaining to student learning and student success throughout the processes of assessment and institutional effectiveness.  It is critical that the VPAE have experience in project management, creating and implementing work plans, strategic goals, long and short-term objectives and metrics.

 

The Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness provides support to Deans in areas of academic interest. She/he serves as a deputy to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a key member of the Academic Affairs leadership team, helping to coordinate the planning efforts for Academic Affairs with regard to continuous improvement, faculty/staff recruitment process, program review, and budget allocations.  The Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness provides key oversight for Academic Affairs staff as directed by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs along with providing supervision for the following units: Accreditation, Assessment, and Testing Services. 

 

The Vice Provost will:

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Administers all assessment information for the university and ensures the integrity of information and electronic systems that support assessment of student learning.
  2. Administers all official curriculum information for the university and ensures the integrity of information and electronic systems that support course and program management.
  3. Gathers, maintains, and analyzes data for Academic Affairs projects and initiatives.
  4. Administers development and review processes to ensure quality of curriculum in transfer, career, and developmental programs and courses, including providing support to new program development and revision of existing programs.
  5. Administers processes for the assessment of student learning in transfer, career, and developmental programs and courses for the purpose of continuous quality improvement, and reports assessment data for internal and external audiences.
  6. Liaises with accreditation bodies and provides leadership, oversight of academic accreditation at all levels of Academic Affairs.
  7. Manages the submission of all curriculum changes (including courses and programs) for approval by the Curriculum Committee and General Education Council.
  8. Oversees the functions of the Office of Academic Effectiveness: Accreditation, Assessment, and Testing Services.
  9. Oversees the recording and publication of accurate course and program information in university publications including the catalog; coordinates program information on the university website with department chairs, program coordinators, deans, and provosts.
  10. Supports the development of new academic programs from conception through implementation.
  11. Participates in all required and relevant University training and development opportunities.
  12. Provides expertise in policy/procedure development related to transfer, and articulation agreements.
  13. Provides leadership to faculty and staff as they investigate, develop, propose, implement, and assess practices that enhance student learning.
  14. Supports the General Education Council, and the Quality Enhancement Plan on behalf of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  15. Assists with other matters as assigned.

The Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness will have strong leadership skills and the ability to articulate a clear and compelling vision for academic success.  The VPAE will demonstrate the ability to initiate and support organizational change, with a collegial, responsive and creative approach, have successful experience managing complex organizations, and knowledge and experience in academic assessment and program review.  The next VPAE will possess knowledge and experience working with accreditation bodies for academic disciplines, experience building high performing teams to promote a student success culture on campus, and will work with a sense of urgency and respond effectively to needs in a fast paced environment.  It is critical that the Vice Provost for Academic Effectiveness have experience gathering and analyzing data and the ability to make data-informed decisions as well as experience with budgeting in a complex environment with multiple revenue sources and cost centers and determining/coordinating resource allocations.  The VPAE has executive oversight of knowledge of online learning administration and pedagogy.  Most importantly, the Vice Provost of Academic Effectiveness will have excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, integrity, good judgment, and high ethical standards, and the ability to work collaboratively and creatively to solve complex problems and issues.

 

Qualifications

 

The successful candidate will have:

 

Required Experience

  1. Terminal degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  2. A record of university-level teaching, research, and service that meets qualifications for faculty tenure in an NSU department.
  3. At least (3) three years’ experience leading an academic unit and a record of at least three years of progressive and successful experience in academic leadership, teaching, research, and service in a college/university environment
  4. Knowledge and experience with accreditation and accreditation bodies.
  5. Knowledge and experience with academic assessment and program reviews.
  6. Ability to identify, collect, analyze, maintain, and report educational data.
  7. Demonstrated experience in institutional policy design, analysis and implementation
  8. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and access, and experience working in a diverse higher education environment with students and faculty from underrepresented groups

 

Preferred/Desirable qualifications

  1. Develop imaginative approaches to achieve individual, departmental and institutional strategic initiatives
  2. Demonstrated experience in institutional policy design, analysis and implementation
  3. Experience leading the development of technologically based administrative/service processes
  4. Knowledge of issues and trends in higher education; issues related to diverse learners and a large multicultural constituency
  5. Understanding and experience with the requirements and processes of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia
  6. Experience in and deep commitment to the mission of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
  7. Ability to cultivate latent talent and understand inclusive excellence
  8. Knowledge of and experience with the standards and processes of SACSCOC
