Assistant Professor of Protected Agriculture

Assistant Professor of Protected Agriculture

Summary of Position

The Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems (ANFS) in the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire seeks candidates for a full-time (9 month) tenure track assistant professor of protected agriculture. The successful candidate will conduct research in the broad area of protected crop production systems that address the environmental, biotic, and market challenges faced by our region’s food producers. Many protected agriculture strategies are employed in the region, including high and low tunnels, greenhouses, pest exclusion structures, etc. The successful candidate will take a systems approach to enhancing protected agriculture strategies. Such systems are often highly technical in their implementation and require adaptive fine-tuning and optimization to enhance their practical value. Research areas could include the development of techniques that increase the efficiency and/or quality of production of specialty horticultural crops in controlled environments by optimizing plant performance and efficiency of energy, nutrient, and water use. The successful candidate will have expertise in some combination of the following fields: plant ecophysiology, horticulture, plant nutrition, agricultural engineering. They are expected to develop a productive, internationally recognized, and externally funded research program that works collaboratively across disciplines with direct, relevant, and beneficial impact on regional stakeholders producing a wide variety of horticultural crops. They will provide vibrant, high-quality instruction for undergraduate and graduate courses in topics related to their expertise and the needs of the department and the Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems major. In addition, the candidate will provide excellent training and research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in the ANFS department.

The Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems (ANFS) (http://colsa.unh.edu/anfs) serves undergraduate majors through its Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems, Animal Science, Nutrition, and Equine Studies programs, as well as graduate students and dietetic interns through a variety of departmental and college-wide programs. Current ANFS faculty research areas include agroecology, animal and plant production, plant breeding and applied genomics, plant pathology, dairy cattle nutrition, food systems analysis, nutritional epidemiology, human nutrition, and disease prevention. We are a vibrant, interdisciplinary department committed to engaging in cross-disciplinary research and teaching at the interface of our food system, human health, and the environment.
