Job Description:


The Education Department at Mount Saint Mary's University invites applicants with a doctoral degree in education or equivalent, for a full-time administrative position as Dean.

The Education Department Dean is responsible for overseeing the development, growth, and maintenance of the various programs operating within the Education Department. Current programs include Masters Programs that lead to Preliminary Credentials in Multiple Subjects, Single Subject, Education Specialist: Mild/Moderate and Deaf and Hard of Hearing, an Induction program, Masters in Instructional Leadership and Individually Designed Programs, an Early Childhood Education (AA) program, and two undergraduate Baccalaureate majors, Liberal Studies and Child Development. The Department also collaborates with the Provost's office to support the operation of the Child Development Center on the Doheny campus.

Our Education and Teacher Credentialing programs at Mount Saint Mary's University are founded on a commitment to social justice, inclusiveness, and leadership. We develop and empower teachers at every stage of their careers by providing them with academic and professional guidance throughout the credentialing process. Our program also helps prepare our students to be competent, confident and successful educators.

Our students benefit from small, intimate classes, dynamic classroom conversations and readily-accessible faculty. Our diverse faculty members challenge our students to grow as future leaders and educators. Assignments are timely, relevant, and geared towards the professional development of our students. Graduate students can earn a Master of Science in Education degree along with any of our credential programs. Undergraduates can earn a Baccalaureate degree along with a teaching credential.

The Dean of the Education Department demonstrates leadership in program administration that supports a quality educational experience for students, a robust enrollment, and a collegial work environment where faculty and staff are professionally rewarded. To do so, the Dean demonstrates the same teacher competencies desired of program faculty, which include a commitment to:

It is expected that the Dean of the Education Department is grounded in relevant content and teaching methods, holding appropriate degree(s) and/or credentials for the role and has experience with TK - 12 students.


Requirements:


The Dean handles or delegates and supervises the following program responsibilities:

Collaboration and Communication
  • Maintain open communication among department faculty and staff through regularly scheduled department meetings, faculty meetings, staff meetings, conferences with faculty and email
  • Maintain communication with students through Ed Dept Newsletters and email alerts
  • Communicate with university support services (registrar, student accounts office, financial aid, graduate admissions, facilities, etc.) to maintain efficient services for students and the department
  • Represent the Education Department with state and local organizations (e.g. AICCU Education Deans)
  • Represent the Education Department at Academic Leadership Council (ALC) meetings and the Graduate Council
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborative partnerships with local entities (e.g. the LA Archdiocese Department of Catholic Schools, LAUSD and other local districts, charter schools and organizations, LA Compact)
  • Administer the Catholic Educator Scholarship grant (partnership with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles - Department of Catholic Schools and LAUSD) related to Title II funding, which includes submitting annual contracts and updated tuition rates to LAUSD, distributing funding via the MSMU financial aid office, and invoicing LAUSD for reimbursement
  • Collaborate with John Tracy Clinic (JTC) with the support of the Director of Education Specialist to oversee the implementation of the DHH program, including financial considerations
  • Communicate with Institutional Advancement about grant possibilities, proposals, and administration
  • Maintain the Department website (with administrative support)
  • Respond to student and faculty concerns

Academic Planning
  • Produce and update annual course planning papers and course schedules, determine faculty load assignments, and verify and adjust online course registration platform each semester as needed
  • Process and approve contracts for adjuncts, coaches, mentors, supervisors, portfolio reviewers, etc. each semester
  • Monitor and maximize course enrollments in collaboration with program directors (e.g., identify and close low enrollment classes)

Growth and Development
  • Seek internal and external grant opportunities to support program development, program improvement, and provide financial support for students
  • Oversee recruitment in collaboration with Graduate Admissions and Undergraduate Admissions to identify potential applicant pools, develop recruitment strategies, and promote Education Department programs (e.g., make sure undergraduate recruitment brochures get revised, work with Graduate Admissions to advertise EDU programs)

Program Review
  • Stay abreast of the CCTC accreditation annual requirements, prepare and submit Common Standards and Preconditions documents, and lead the Department's accreditation review process. (The accreditation cycle ends with a site visit, due to occur in March 2023. The new Dean will take over at the beginning of a new cycle.)
  • Lead the annual data systems collection and reporting
  • Oversee annual university-wide data collection and assessment for program improvement in relation to student outcome measures
  • Annually collect and review updates to the catalog from Program Directors and ensuring accuracy

Department Administration
  • Update and maintain departmental systems for data management (student/faculty databases) and program administration (timely administration of communication to faculty regarding class rosters and grade sheets, monitoring probation, etc.)
  • Establish Department calendar, schedule events, and assign responsibility for Department tasks (e.g., scholarship awards, library book order, recruitment events)
  • Monitor adherence to Department and University policies and procedures (e.g., admissions, probation, academic petitions, grading, registration)
  • Monitor Department's operating budget, including approval of all expenditures
  • Oversee program quality in collaboration with program directors (using data from course evaluations and review of course syllabi)
  • Maintain currency with CCTC teacher credentialing requirements and establish advisement procedures that will provide students with timely, accurate information (e.g. revise advisement worksheets and procedure guidelines when there are CCTC credentialing or program changes
  • Coordinate use of office space and equipment

Supervision
  • Supervising staff: student liaison, data assistants and credential analysts
  • Evaluate and provide professional support to full-time faculty for tenure and promotion

Teaching
  • Teach 1-2 courses per academic year

All University Responsibilities
  • Attend faculty assemblies, faculty convocation, graduation events, participate in university-wide recruitment events, and serve on faculty committees
  • Additional duties as assigned
