The appointment, initially in Statistics, is expected to transfer to a forthcoming Department focusing on data science.

UC Berkeley is a global leader in undergraduate Data Science and Statistical education. The successful candidate will join a diverse and welcoming community of scholars and educators who work collaboratively to create educational, intellectual and professional opportunities with broad societal impact for a new generation of students Together, they train data scientists who are equipped not only to create innovative tools but also to be mindful of the social context and ethical implications of their work.

The primary duties and responsibilities of an appointee to the position are pedagogical innovation, teaching and advising, and academic program development. Secondary responsibilities are professional and/or scholarly achievement and creative activities including those related to instruction and pedagogy. Therefore, the appointee is expected to demonstrate a record of and/or potential for pedagogical excellence and innovation both in the classroom and in scholarly activities.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core values of the Department of Statistics and CDSS. We believe that our excellence can only be realized by faculty, students, and staff who fully share our commitment to these values. The appointee is expected to demonstrate equitable and inclusive teaching practices such as those described on the website for the Center for Teaching & Learning (https://teaching.berkeley.edu/resources/promoting-equitable-and-inclusive-learningenvironment).

Since the formation of the Department of Statistics in 1955, its faculty and graduates have shaped the foundations and applications of Statistics. The Department currently has over 30 active research faculty, six of whom are members of the National Academy of Sciences: [Peter Bickel, Jennifer Chayes, Steven Evans, Michael Jordan, Rasmus Nielsen, Bin Yu]. It has been at the forefront of Data Science education, offering innovative undergraduate curricula and an open-source web-based interactive computing platform for research and instruction. CDSS also hosts an annual National Workshop on Data Science Education.

In parallel with the formation of the new College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), the creation of a new Department of Data Science (DoDS) is also under consideration. This innovative department would serve to advance the frontiers of data science by recruiting outstanding and diverse faculty working at the interfaces of computing, statistics, and domain applications and by fostering cross-campus collaborative interactions. We envision world-class leaders in the foundations, applications, and implications of data science co-located in a common transdisciplinary academic unit that would facilitate cross-fertilization between these fields, so that the latest computational and statistical methods are brought to bear soundly and rigorously to address timely and high-impact societal questions. As one of Berkeley’s newest academic departments, DoDS would embed diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) into its foundation. It would recruit a diverse and inclusive faculty that would cultivate an open pedagogical environment to train the next generation of data scientists, with both first-rate computational and statistical foundations and a deep understanding of the applications and ethical implications of data and algorithms.
