EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CAREER PLANNING

BOWDOIN COLLEGE

Brunswick, Maine

Bowdoin College, one of the nation’s finest institutions of higher education, seeks a transformational leader to serve as its next Executive Director of Career Planning. The Executive Director will join Bowdoin at a time of tremendous opportunity. Driven by the conviction that it is the obligation of the College to ensure the post-graduate success of all students, Bowdoin has identified career planning as a top institutional priority. The College is seeking to expand the design and delivery of career planning programs and services, enhancing its proactive, holistic approach that favors early and systemic engagement; provides students with the opportunity to explore the world of work and the full range of career, internship and graduate study possibilities available to them; and offers student-centered and readily accessible resources that meet the needs of students of all financial backgrounds at every stage of their Bowdoin experience. With the full support of College leadership, the next Executive Director will make career readiness a point of distinction for all students and provide visionary, energized leadership for an evolving Career Planning Center (CPC) that aims to be without peer among small liberal arts colleges nationwide.

Housed in the Division of Student Affairs, the CPC is responsible for all aspects of career development, from advising on career and graduate study to fostering employer and alumni connections that lead to internships and jobs. The CPC’s strength lies in the supportive, individualized advising and programming it provides to students over four years of study; the real-world expertise of staff; a volunteer career advisory network of more than 6,000 alumni and parents; deep and broad connections to employers; and the post-graduate success of alumni who pursue traditional and non-traditional career paths as varied as arts, communications, consulting, finance, education, law, policy, marketing, medicine, science, engineering, advocacy, research, and technology, among others.

Building on organizational enhancements and successes of the past, the next Executive Director of Career Planning will lead from a position of strength with support from senior leaders of the College, significant expanded resources from Bowdoin’s next comprehensive fundraising campaign, and a newly renovated office space that facilitates more robust interaction with students and greater collaboration among staff. The Executive Director will set the overall direction for the CPC, provide strategic and operational leadership, employ innovative approaches to further update and expand services that assist students in their professional and academic development, coordinate career activities and programs with faculty, foster a campus-wide career culture, and maintain and bolster relationships with alumni, employers, and parents.

To achieve these ambitions, Bowdoin requires a creative, entrepreneurial leader who will leverage the College’s abundant internal and external resources in support of students. The ideal candidate will have seven or more years of relevant experience, a track record of visionary leadership, experience leading a high-performing team, strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to inclusion and diversity, comfort with data and a focus on outcome-driven work, and a deep appreciation for the liberal arts.
