Dean of Student Life

Johns Hopkins University

Baltimore, MD

The Johns Hopkins University (JHU), one of the world’s premier research universities, invites applications and nominations for the Dean of Student Life (DOSL).  The Dean of Student Life serves as part of a dynamic student affairs senior leadership team supporting the Vice Provost for Student Affairs in directing and managing critical and strategic priorities, initiatives and activities that will enhance and/or transform student engagement and support services at Johns Hopkins University.  Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Affairs (VPSA), the Dean of Student Life takes an active leadership role in creating and sustaining an engaging, inclusive, and caring environment for all Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS) and Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) undergraduate and graduate students. The new DOSL will join Hopkins at a time of tremendous momentum and opportunity as the university has embarked on a transformative effort to reimagine the student experience and overall delivery of student services.

As the leader of the Office of Student Life on the Homewood campus, the Dean maintains a strong, visible presence within diverse student communities and organizations and cultivates trusting relationships and lines of communication between students and the university.  The Dean provides crisis and emergency leadership on student issues related internally and externally to the Johns Hopkins Homewood community, and serves as point person for communicating a broad range of critical issues to university officials and individual parents/families members as appropriate.  The DOSL provides oversight for student leadership and engagement, community programming, diversity and inclusion initiatives, residential life, and student conduct. The Dean also provides leadership to enhance undergraduate retention and graduation in partnership with the Dean of Academic and Student Services and serves as a key member of the university-wide student affairs leadership team.

The ideal candidate will be a committed and experienced student affairs professional who has thrived in complex, highly demanding, fast paced environments of excellence where expectations for performance and productivity are high.  S/he will bring a deep familiarity with trends and challenges in the field of student affairs.  The DOSL should bring a record of successful leadership, consensus-building, and an ability to build sustaining and effective relationships with faculty, staff and University leadership.
